Why do so many Americans want to.....? |
Visit Ireland???
Not all...but a lot do!!
Last year, when I was on holidays in America...when people would ask you where you are from and I relied Ireland, they would say: "Oh I would love to visit Ireland and see all the lovely Castles!"
These were just random people that were saying this...but I dont see why? I dont think Ireland is any better than any other country!
Why do you think they say this?!?

Well it may be because the Irish have talked up their own country very well AND when Ireland is shown on movies it's all beautiful.
Besides this maybe the Tourist Board is doing a good job with our euro!!
You should be pleased that so many people want to come here, it IS beautiful!! |
|

I should be doing something else
 |
Because a lot of Americans have Irish ancestry so they feel a connection with Ireland, plus we have a strong culture and Ireland really is a beautiful Island - As someone above said, the landscape would be very different to what most Americans are used to. |

Well, apart from the scenery and historical sites, you have to remember that a very large portion of American's are Irish. A much larger portion than other European countries because the Irish immigration to the US in the 1800's was on a massive scale.
So, for many of us, our family tree includes a great great grandmother and grandfather who took a boat ride 150 years ago :) |

well for one they said it because they were making small talk (had you said you were from any other country, they would most likely have told you they would like to visit that country) and for two, many people love to travel no matter the destination. they just want to see the world |

Ancestry... so many Americans are Irish descendants, so Ireland is very famous over there.
Checking out the history the countries with the highest emigration rates were 1) Ireland 2)Italy 3)Greece 4) Other Europeans before the wwii due to the rise of fascism and a few East Europeans who wanted to escape from the communist tyranny.
Check out American surnames, the half of them have Irish roots, some Italian, Greek or Slavic.
On the other hand, a travel to Europe is always something very exciting for an American, Canadian and Australian.
Yes Ireland is not better than any other country, but it really depends what do you want to do. For a not very well traveled person and for someone who doesn't know a lot about Europe is ok. My favorite cities that I always reccomend someone to visit in Europe are Florence (Italy), Edinburgh (Scotland), Berlin (Germany), Zurich (Switzerland)... |

The heritage of the majority of Americans is Irish-American or German-American, so it's probably that they want to see where their grandparents or great grandparents originated.
It's just different than what they are used to, just as people from cold areas like the UK love to visit sunnier climes. To someone in a sunny beach town, they probably wonder why tourists make such a fuss over the weather. It's also likely that they were just making conversation and being friendly. We say the same things to French and English people...we are just curious about other places. |

If you had ever spent a few years living in west Texas you might understand why. There is a lot of America that isn't scenic in any possible meaning of the word. Some times we just need a change of scene and a trip to someplace really different is what we need. |

They have this notion that it's full of castles .... not that you can visit most of those castles. But there are many unused tower-houses still dotting the countryside, I can think of 2 within 3 miles of my house. I think that when these people think 'castle', they're thinking of a Bunratty-type effort, which is NOT the original castle - Bunratty castle was a ruin, and underwent extensive renovation to bring it back to its previous state. Not many castles in Ireland are like Bunratty, in fact considering the number of castles that were built, very few have survived intact, and fewer still are actually used.
You're right, Ireland isn't any better than any other country, but it's certainly nicer than a lot of places. But then I am biased. |
