Why do we have airport police and not airport gardai?

I was just watching the tv last night and it showed airport police at Dublin Airport and I just wondered why are they called police and not gardai? Are they real police officers or just jobsworths?

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge
They're just jobsworths. They put on uniforms and throw their weight about, a bit like bouncers in a nightclub. They're probably trying to compensate for the size of their walkie talkies.

The Airport Police and the Fire Service are run by the airport authority and are not linked to the Garda or the local fire brigade.

They are not members of the Gardai. They are a security force, trained by and under the supervision of the Dublin Airport Authority, just like it's own fire service, which has nothing to do with Dublin Fire Brigade.
They can apprehend suspects of crime, but must call in the REAL Gardai to make charges.
The guys at the Immigration Control are real members of the Gardai and answer to the Government and not the DAA.
In reality the are jumped up Security Guards in fancy uniforms.

To police a situation, infers that the comings and goings of airport passengers are being monitored for safety and security measures.

The gardai are law enforcers across a wide variety of activities, ranging from domestic rifts, to murder. They are a support group to the public, and their duties entail all manners of crime, law enforcement and general peace keeping measures.

The airport police on the other hand, are solely dedicated to the protection of the airports and its passengers and staff.

There are both Gardai and airport police at Dublin Airport. The airport police have only bye law powers which are enforceable on the airport premises only. There are Gardai stationed in Immigration and in a new station close to the original North Terminal Building

Technically an airport is private property so you have airport police to run security. They have the same powers as gardai but only within the confines of the airport. If they arrest anyone they then turn them over to the gardai. The airport is governed by laws and bylaws so they are the law at the airport but powerless outside.

Probably because there are so many international people coming through that the word police is easier to understand. Although the Garda National Immigration Bureau uses the word garda and that's pretty international (it's where the asylum seekers go to sign in) but I suppose because they've already been here for some time and applied for asylum they should at least know who the gardai are

BIG D
The word 'Police' is commonly used across the world and since airports by definition will attract incoming visitors that may well be the reason.
