Why doesn't Dublin have a subway/rapid transit system?

We have the Luas, a limited tram system, and the DART, a limited rail system.

Before the reintroduction of the tram system the idea of an underground net work was put forward, but it was decided it would be too expensive to build.

An underground would be great, but unfortunately our politicians seem to have difficulty understanding the concept of 'longer term benefits'

As Christin pointed out Dublin is covered by both Luas rapid transit system and the Dart rail system. The Luas connects the city centre with most major areas of surrounding area, having travelled in Dublin extensively I have found it an easy and efficient way to get around.

One of the major reasons for the non-implementation of a subway system in Dublin is that of Geology, Dublin originated as an area that can only be described as boggy marshland, this has been controlled over the centuries to allow firm footings for the city's major structures to be established. To dig into this historically unstable ground would be both difficult and highly expensive.

A second reason that should be considered is that of archeology, something that dublin is rich in, and I personally feel that history and archeology should be respected.

The city was never big enough to put a subway in. But now there are plans in place for one sometime in the next few million years.

This site gives you all the details http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dublin_Metro.

I'm afraid even with a good subway nothing is gonna be solved. The central attitude IS WRONG. If the metro-train has it's last stop in the city center and then you will be expected to get another in order to go in your destination, waste of money, better do not build it up.

Yes Dublin was not a very big and bussy city a few years before. There was no demand of metro

The Dart, it goes from Bray to Howth

They have surface trains. The Luas is nicer than the Dart in my opinion - but both will get you where you need to go.
