I've answered already but can I make a small suggestion? Go to your local/School library find the politics section and pick up a book about NI, there's thousands of them!

Susan McKay has written 2 excellent books on the troubles.

If you don't want to do that at least find something you can reference. For all you know we could all be nutters who know nothing about NI.

If your looking for some good objective sites to learn about the troubles I'd suggest using.

to start the essay, bring in the present day, where peace reigns. And as a Christian country, with similar cultures ,loves, and style, end up in a murderous 30 year war. What brought about the hatred, is a very open question, that basically 2 pages wouldn't fill.

So the question is, why the differences in living, work, and voting status between Catholics and Protestants ? Because , afterall, the troubles began as a civil right movement : that was an apparent success in the US, but failed in Ireland.

The answers, lie in history, of occupation, gerrymandering and a devotion to either, the crown or the free state, based purely on a religious divide.

Go where you want from there, the Scottish immigrants, or should I say settlers.

It's a long and deep essay they want you to write. Peace was achieved, once a type of trust is established, it took time, Mo Mowlem, and a willingness to find it.

Or you could throw it right back at them and ask "why is it so hard to get peace in the USA?"

The Questioner
Ireland's history is not just Black and White, it is a tapestry of many colours. It was not just a (Roman) Catholic country and it is not so today. The early Christian Church, the Celtic church has its roots going back to the Eastern church. Both states consist of members of both the Reformed churches and the Roman Catholic church, this has always been so. Many of the leaders in the various rebellions against the mainly English Rule were members of the Reformed Churches, as were the leaders in the organisations to restore the Irish Gaelic language. The Majority of Irish people voted in 1922 in a general election for candidates who wanted to set up an Irish Parliament, and Home Rule. This was in all 32 counties. In the province of Ulster a majority of those who voted were in favour of Home Rule, but by removing the people of 3 of the counties of Ulster from the equation this produced a majority in the remaining 6 counties who wished to retain a link with the United Kingdom. And as a result of this Northern Ireland was formed. However, King George V. when opening the Northern Parliament expressed his desire that in a very short time all Irish People of whatever faith could live together as one Nation. We today are working together for the common good, and in time we will all agree on the way forward. This will never be brought about by force, but by Love and working for the rights and freedom of all for the common good. At least 99.9% of the Irish/British-Irish & Scottish-Irish people wish to live in peace, but as long as we are divided, there will always be some people who think that force can bring about Unity, it never will. In the Northern state there are people of all faiths on both sides of the divide, e.g in favour or against the Union with the U.K. or in favour of unity with the rest of the country.

It goes back to Cromwell's reign (wikipedia) it for more detail to answer your question i will answer from fact and from personal views of my own
this will help for school... (lazy) anyway the facts oliver cromwell let people die in ireland on black (day with a y in it) there was a famine people revolted and emiging land owners treated native people poorly (sound familiar) and went back to england and left them to die thats how it started but there is still hate now because (personal) some idiotic people like to stir up troble and be racist and at the time there was no ethnic people to pick on but you guessed it the british so thats why theres hate and the same principle applies today idiots like to be terrorists or just strongly oppinioned about people and they decide to hate the nearest people around in this case britain.

all because of the english protestants and the irish catholics dont get along because of religion and because the english took over ireland years and years ago and when we defeated them they still kept a bit of ireland which is known as northern ireland

oh i love ireland! basically the irish and english hate each and other and way back when, the irish were all catholic and the english were protestant. after the potatoe famine when the english didnt help the starving irish, the seed of hatred began. the protestant irish originally come from england or scotland. so because of their history, they hate each other and their religion.
who knows why they are fighting when they both are
christian. oh well, they sure are stubborn. good luck!

wow, 8 thumbs down??? im telling the truth people we just spent a month on this in school
