A white person "Duine Bui," - which really means a yellow person
and a black person "Duine Gorm," - which means a blue person.

I've heard two stories.
Firstly that the first black people that came to Ireland were from a tribe that wore blue clothing (they were possibly Moroccan) and were named for the colour of their clothing not their skin colour.
The second is the same as above about the devil. It may be a combination of both of course.
Also never heard duine buí being used. |

We dont call white people duine buí.
A white person is "bánach" or "duine geal"
(duibe geal mean "light person")
A black person is "duine gorm"
I dont know why gorm (blue) is used instead of dubh (black).
Although why use dubh either, why not use donn (brown)?

Because Caucasian people arn't REALLY white (I've always seen myself as pink), and Negroids arn't really black, that's just how we've chosen to see them.
My Brother in law is from Nigeria, and he is Blue-Black, so I can see why they might use that term...
What I want to know is, what do they call Asians on Gaeilge? :D |

I've never heard of the term "Duine Buí" before. The Irish term for a white person is 'duine geal'.
The reason 'duine gorm' is used as supposed to 'duine dubh' is because 'An Duine Dubh' is the devil. However the term 'duine dubh' is still used from time to time. |

we call black people directly translated Fear Gorm "blue man" fear means man gorm means blue.
the reason we call them blue is because the term black man is already applied to the devil
black man means the devil
so when black people first came to Ireland we had to give them a new name that wouldn't be so controversial! |

not everyone does
I call them duine bán.... everyone I know does.... but it depends..... white people arnt 100% white and black people arent 100% black EVER ......so in english.... its not right either..... if you want to get down to it why dont you call them peach and beige and brown and whatever other colour there is!!!
