Will a one way ticket suffice in going to Ireland for a 3 month holiday?

My boyfriend lives in Ireland and in November it will be my turn to go visit him. I am from Missouri in the USA. I am planning on booking a flight soon, but I want to only purchase a one way ticket so that while I am there we can book the returning flight together so we can be on the same flight back to the states. However, I am wondering if immigration will be suspicious if I only have a one way ticket, I don't want them to think I am going to try to stay there and then not let me in. Any help would be great! :)

Why can't you and your boyfriend agree on the return date now, before you go, and book the flight now? I think some immigration officials might be suspicious of you having a one-way ticket, especially since you want to get in for three months and that's the upper limit for Americans to travel to Ireland without any special visa (well, 90 days is the limit, to be exact). Basically, you need to have some kind of proof that you really do plan on leaving at the end of those 90 days.

If you really, really want to stick to your original plan, I would recommend contacting your nearest Irish Consulate General and asking if they have any tips for handling your situation at the immigration gates, or contact your airline and ask if you can book a tentative return date (subject to change once you and your boyfriend decide when to return). It will probably cost more, but it would solve your problem of having proof that you really are planning to leave Ireland when your 90 days are up.

I've been to Ireland twice in the past year and have never been asked for my roundtrip ticket.... actually the only country that has asked me that question was England, and all I had to present was a printed out copy from my computer. They just ask you how long you are staying and why you have come to Ireland.

What you could say is that you will be in Ireland for a few weeks and are traveling Europe. On the way out, I don't even think they looked at my passport to return to the U.S. after they saw that I was an American....

First of all you need to have a round trip ticket usually at customs at the airport they will only give you a month stamp and you will have to go to the Gardai station and get more time. They may want to see a bank statement recent and proof that your insurance will cover you in Ireland. Only if you get one of those picky Gardai have it ready just in case.

i don't think as an american coming to ireland that you will get that much of a hard time. Make sure you don't need some sort of visa for a 3 month stay. American immigration is not ireland's problem....
