i wouldnt have thought so no, i am sure its just that you need something to prove that you are you, i.e. a bus pass with photo should be fine. you certainly dont need a passport so i wouldnt have thought you would need a counterpart. if in doubt, just check with the ferry company.

If you're asking if you can enter the Republic of Ireland with a UK provisional license, the answer is: legally your UK or NI provisional license is just valid in UK/NI.
If you're asking if you can enter Northern Ireland with a provisional license, I believe there are no problems, as long as you abide by the provisional license rules, ie. having someone fully licensed with you.

I often get the ferry from Belfast to Scotland to see the football (Celtic) and occasionally from Dublin to Wales.

I have never once been asked for ID on either route, however, I am often asked what my nationality is on the way back into Ireland (from Wales) - but never asked to prove it.

I'd say you'd be fine with no ID at all (assuming you are British) and coming from Britain, however, I'd recommend you bring SOMETHING as proof of ID just incase.

Provisional licences are only valid in the jurisdiction they are issued so if you are from the UK and are entering NI then your provisional license is valid once accompanied by a fully licensed driver.

If you intend driving on a UK provisional license in the Republic then it is considered invalid - ie: driving without a license, and if stopped by the Gardai you will be charged with driving without a license and face a large fine and probably court with the probability of a custodial sentence, I wouldn't try it as at this time of year the Gardai are demons for stopping motorists.

Oh, and on entering the Republic it is always advisable to have a photo id - not everyone is checked but you could be ! and without id you would probably be refused entry without one.
