Women's Christmas in Cork?

When I was growing up in Cork, the 6th of January was known as the women's Christmas. Is it still celebrated or has it gone out of fashion?

My Dose Makes Angels
It's only celebrated very the devout Christians. Most people don't recognise it as a holiday.

That's really interesting and thanks for asking. The official feast on the 6th January is Epiphany but it has various 'interpretations' in Europe.

Have never heard this one from Cork - I wonder about its origins?

It was known as Little Christmas in other parts of Ireland. Never knew it was Women's Christmas in Cork!

bluebell
Nollaig na mban - Women's Christmas - in Mayo too. Probably all over the country. But here it doesn't get much extra recognition - it's more of a historical thing, a relic of days gone by, acknowledged as being the day that is in it, but no other celebration

Yes its still celebrated here. I'm from Cork. Most of the pubs and hotels will have some form of entertainment for the women and its usually older women that go out and celebrate.

Singers like Joe Mac and Sonny Knowles (famous Cork singers) are usually singing at some gig that night.

From what I've seen there is no religious connotation to this celebration. Its there merely for the girls to have their own night put. Just a bit of fun.

It was always know to us as "Little Christmas Day" as this is the day that the 3 wise men arrived to see Jesus in Bethlahem and the final day of the Christmas season. We still celebrate it
