If the course you are doing is a 1-year one, then perhaps it is cramming in too much for someone who isn't repeating, and didn't have a 2-year period before. Returning to your own school, it would only be strange for the first couple of days. After that, you will hardly notice the age gap. You are all there for the one reason.
Have you asked your present teachers to explain things more clearly so you can understand and keep up, or if they feel you would need an extra year?
Don't give up - success is in sight, and you are to be congratulated on perseverance and ambition. Go for it !! |

I dont think its too bad...
My sister is 16 and in 5th year at the moment. She has a friend who is almost 18 in the same year...its not that big a deal
Obviously youre a little older and it makes a difference but remember that its only one year in your whole life and it'll be worth it.
Im in first year of college atm and im 18...but the people ive met range from 17-20...
I actually repeated my lc last year and i was the youngest in the class...you would never have known though
Just dont make a fuss over the age gap, get on with it...and you'll be in college in a flash
xxx Good luck! |

It might be an idea to go back and take the time you need to do the course, and not pay any mind to the age. Bear in mind also that plenty of mature students go to college and university, and are on the same playing field as 18 and 19 year olds, so why would the Leave Cert be any different from that? |

I definately think you're not too old to go back, i know a guy who went back to do his LC at 22. 18 isnt all that old to be in 5th year really, i was 18 when i did my LC so you'd only be a year older than i was.
In the grand scheme of things getting your LC is more important than what age you are when you do it. |

There is no age limit for wanting to learn and educate yourself, go for it you will thank yourself when you are older.
Dont give up. The way everthing is going at the moment you will need all the qualifications you can get for a job,
I do believe the government should outlaw the ability to leave school after the junior cert as it dosent help the long term prospects of the individual. |

My son's friend did well in the leaving, went to Uni then decided he wanted to be a Doctor. After doing a year at uni he went back got the extra points he needed and he's now a qualified Doctor.
Concentrate on what's important for your future rather than fretting what others might think.Takes guts to make the right decisions sometimes so you have to rise to the challenge if you want to get on.
Also lots of students do transitional years and are a bit older when they leave school anyway. |

Not at all! I would say, however that you might find it a little strange to be in the year with people who you once knew as being in the years below you. If I was you I might go to a different school but you're not too old at all |

No, you will be fine!If that is what it takes to get a good job and have a good life then go for it! Don't let age put you off education!
I'm in third year now and me and my friends will be doing TY next year, and do you know what? My friend will be 18 in 5th year! And it doesn't bother her! These school days are supposed to be the best of our life? Well if it's true, you don't want to miss it! |

No a friend of mine went back to fifth year in a normal secondary school when she was 21. For lots of reasons she left when she was 16 and was only ready to do the LC when she had grown up a bit. You might find it easier to go back if you went to a different school than the one you went to before. Sometimes it can be hard facing all the same faces and the same teachers as when you were 12. A fresh start in another school might be easier on you. That's what my friend did and she said it was the best thing she could have ever done. She did her LC last year, she's going to UCC now and loving it - got her first CAO choice and everything!. |

Where are you doing the course at the minute? In a college?
I think you would be better with sticking to what you are doing at the minute. Leaving your current course and going back to school will cause a lot of disruption and affect your studies even more.
Keep your head down, do your assignments the same day you get it (or at least start them the same day and do a little each day). if you need any help with anything then you can buy books called "less stress more success". You can get them in any good stationary/book shop, the book shop that you would usually get your school books should carry them and each book is specific to each subject and level (ie higher, ordinary and foundation) There a good help.I know a few people that really found them good.
Another option is asking your tutor for help or enquiring about any services in your college. my college (trinity college) has a writing resource centre that you bring a finished essay to and they will help you make it better. We also have a maths class on friday for anyone to drop in and get help with there homework.
try different methods of revision ie. making notes, thinking about what happened in your head. read your notes and try re-write them without looking at them to make sure you got the jist of what they were about. Do some extra questions and give them to our tutor for correction.
Good luck and hang in there!
******EDIT*****
In my maths class there are 40 and 50 year olds! They started this year and are doing great, if they can do it then you can! |

I don't think that going back into school and rejoining year 11 would be an option open to you. Your best path would be to go to a college where they offer GCSEs on their curriclum as well as A levels etc. |
