Wouldn't it be great if the country banned cigarettes and closed all of the cigarette factories? |
as a smoker, yes every1 will go mad for the first 2 weeks, but think about how many lives will be saved,
although i have found it extremely difficult to give up, ive always tried to give up on my own which isnt enough, i mean if smokers think it wont work or thats a crazy idea, that will never happen, well 10 years ago they said it was a crazy idea to ban smoking in pubs and look how quickly people got use to it.
i know people will be looking for cigaretts from "cigarette dealers" but if you think about it a good few of the population who smoke probably wont be able to find a dealer so will have no choice but to give up so its still saving lives.
& also if a random person tried to lose weight on their own, they would find it alot harder to do it on their own than if they did it with thousands so my point is that if we do it together it will be alot easier than doing it on our own, no temptation anywhere so why wont the government do anyting about it?
factories close al the time Additional Details factories close all the time and people are always out of jobs because of factories closing but them factories closing don't save lives
and also pubs havnt been as busy as they were before the ban but still people adjusted to it, i think alot of people have tried everything and this is the only way out, no temptation no nothing, just all smokers trying to give up together which is never gona hapen unless the factories close and it becomes banned altogether |

as a smoker who constantly tries to give up i would love if they just nipped it in the bud and stopped it in clean swoop, sure there would be lots of irrational behavour from the smokin public for a week :) but wed all get over it eventually
hey i wonder if the goverment would provide nicotine clinics like they do for methadone, hee hee and wed have to smoke all our ciggerettes in front of the nurse :) |

And what's next? Banning McDonalds and fatty foods? Closing out bars? Prohibiting hard liquor? Smoking may be harmful as hell, but so are many other things (trans fats, bad cholesterol, alcohol) that are bad too. The thing for me boils down to freedom of choice and the fact that as free adults folks have the right to chose how they want to live and what they want to consume. The government should not tell anyone how to live their lives or what to do or put in their bodies. It is an invasion of my privacy and freedom. I do believe in limits and education, but not in prohibition. In history, when "temptation" has been tried to be eliminated, the result has been black markets and illegal operations. Provided smoking is done in open areas and by people over the age of 19 who are not pregnant or nursing, I don't see a need for banning anything. |

The government wont do anything about it because of the money they make from taxes. Do you know that every budget they actually have someone who sits down and does the maths and comes up with a figure that will make x amount of money more from cigarettes also taking into account the number of people who will quit from the price hike! Practically the entire cost of a packet of cigarettes is tax... that is the reason why the government wont do anything about it... and it wouldnt save money in the long run in terms of hospital bills etc... if they have someone who calculates the profits you can be assured they have that expense calculated to. In short.... the sale of cigarettes is too profitable for our government to make then illegal to get! |

Prohibition of alcohol didn't work here in the U.S.A., and in fact made organized crime even stronger and more violent. Also, people found ways to obtain and drink alcohol in plenty of creative ways.
Believe me, prohibition of cigarettes in Ireland won't be any more successful. Besides, as several posters have already pointed out, there is revenue money in alcohol and tobacco for the government; it will not forgo that profit stream.
I agree that the decision and the freedom to drink or smoke tobacco or marijuana should be entirely left up to the individual, although I do believe in a minimum age regulation. |

Most certainly not! as a previous poster has said the Government are not here to make us healthier, what about FREEDOM OF CHOICE??
As a smoker, sure I know its bad for me, every smoker knows its bad for them in the long run, but we enjoy it, personally speaking I dont want to give up smokes, maybe in the future, but not now. also, what about the poor aul pensioners that really dont have that much in their life, would it be fair to take them away from them (and don't start going on about the heath benefits if they do, In the nicest possible way they dont have long left anyway, so leave them with their fags!)
To the first answerer "Give me Liberty or Give me Death" here here totally agree! |
