connemara is good. just type in connemara and it will come up
in connemara you can do golf and pitch and putt, Fishing on rivers lakes and the sea, could reward you with salmon, trout, cod, ling and even tuna. cycling, and with many roads there you wont have to see the same scenery twice, sbut you can always go back again. horse riding and pony trekking, bog and sea shore walking, long and short Then there are more challenging activities, rock climbing, scuba diving, sailing, mountain climbing, swimming in the sea, and in pools,
you can watch marathons being run through a landscape to take your breath away. Golf competitions, horse racing on the beach, Gaelic football (GAA), rugby, and soccer can be watched, and tag rugby played on a beach is unique. Boat races and regattas take place throughout the summer also ypu can go camping!!!!!!!!
Good-luck.
Have fun..=)..!!!!!!!!! |

Hi, you want to go to a summer school, right? Ask your Irish teacher, it's their job to know of these things.
I went to two different places when I was a secondary school student: Cape Clear, known in Irish as Oilean Chleir, off the coast of West Cork - naturally I hated it at first but I was crying with the rest of them coming home 3 weeks later. The other one I went to was Ventry or Ceann Tra on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, and that was good too, but somehow Cape Clear is the better one in my head. |

If I'm wrong here, I apologise, but from the way you worded the question I think you are probably from or living in another country, and so I would assume you may well have learned basic Irish from a book/CD combination. This is not a criticism, and I congratulate you on it. Even with these basics, you are probably as fluent as a large proportion of citizens who have lived here (outside the GaeltachtaĂ) since they were born.
If I am right, then you really need to know which dialect you have been learning. What I speak is a combination of Standard "School" Irish and Ulster (Donegal) Irish and with that, I have to ask Connacht Irish speakers to slow down, and when it comes to Cork/Kerry speakers, I really find it hard to make out what they are saying and usually get lost quickly.
To give a simple example, goodnight (OĂche mhaith) could be pronounced anywhere from "e-ha whawt" to "ih-he vha" (I've also heard "icky wha" but I'm sure thats an English speaker having a go) - although there is a standard spelling, there is no standard pronunciation.
I would recommend going to somewhere that speaks the dialect you have been learning.
The only one I have spent any real time in is Donegal, and I have to stress that the bus service is shite utterly, and you either need to be very fit, prepared to hitch-hike, or have transport.
Dunlewey (Gweedore) has a youth hostel if you are looking to do it on the cheap, and it just next to a climbable mountain, but Dunlewey itself is a tiny place, and I have to be honest, in Dunlewey village - which consists of two churches (one in ruins), a Post Office, a garage-come-conveniece store, a few houses, a pub and a payphone, I have hardly ever heard a word of Irish.
The hostel is also about 2 or 3 miles from the nearest bus route, so if you have luggage, book your taxi in advance.
In the locality is Bunbeg, Derrybeg Gweedore etc - but these are long roads, not exactly pedestrian friendly, and a walk to another village and back will take up most of a day, and you will hear people speaking Irish there. I'm sure there must be somewhere to hire a bike.
If you want the bus timetables for this area, send me a message.
This page seems to run through them:
http://www.myguideireland.com/holidays-in-the-gaeltacht
You also need to bear in mind that not everywhere in what is a 'technically recognised' gaeltacht is actually a place where Irish is spoken. Certain places eg Dingle in Kerry and Dungloe in Donegal are mainly English speaking. |

Are you looking to go just for a holiday or for a class of some sort? NUIG (National University of Ireland Galway) runs a summer Irish course in Carraroe, which is right in Conamara (we're talking so far into Conamara it's past Spiddal). That course is four weeks long so it might not suit you, but it would be worth a look. You can even get college credit for it! The website is here: http://www.nuigalway.ie/international_summer_school/irish_language.html
It looks like there's some information on courses in the Donegal Gaeltacht here: http://www.oideas-gael.com/
I could have sworn there were classes in Dingle too but I can't find links to them, sadly.
If you're more interested in just a vacation, I'm going to warn you that getting around can be tough due to lack of public transportation. However, you can usually walk around small towns (Dingle, for example, is lovely and I think you would miss a lot sitting in a car the whole time), and most places have at least one hotel, it's just that getting between towns can be a hassle if you don't have a car. |
