1 day in Venice - pl suggest a plan?

Dear Friend,

I will be staying in Venice for ONE DAY (just 1 day in Dec 2nd week) and it will be my first time there. Where should I go (also how) and what should I do?
Thanks in advance for your suggestion.

Pick up a map from your hotel, train station, or information booth.

Take Vaporetto No. 1 from the Santa Lucia train station area right along the Grand Canal to San Marco. This will give you a great view of the palazzos of the Grand Canal.

Visit San Marco Basilica, the gold mosaics are exquisite (maybe do this first to avoid the crowds).

Go to the top of the Campanile opposite for some great views of Venice.

Wander around St Mark's Square (where Basilica and Campanile are)

Walk along the little streets, canals and over the bridges.

Visit any churches you come across on the way.

Cross the main bridges of the Grand Canal, Scalzi (near train station); Rialto, with it's shops and market; Accademia where, if you have time, you can visit the gallery.

Have lunch in a little bar/cafe somewhere, not St Mark's Square as that's well and truly overpriced. But it is nice for coffee, although a tad expensive.

How to do it? Most people walk in Venice, it's a small place, or take a vaporetto.

If you can afford it, take a gondola ride, but that will set you back 60euros for 40 mins. As you only have one day in Venice it would be better to spend that time walking the streets and taking the vaporettos.

My advice to anyone travelling to Venice, whether for the first time or the hundredth time is the same. It is also the same whether you have one hour or one week. The answer is - "Get Lost."

Go for a walk. window shop and explore. the real joy of Venice is it's uniqueness. There is nowhere any where else in the world like it. Around every corner is a new adventure. Every restaurant every cafe, every shop is unlike anywhere else in the world. San Marco's is lovely but there are similar churches other places in the world. But there is nothing like a Venetian neighbourhood.

PS take your camera.

I'd suggest visiting the Piazza San Marco and the surroundings, they have a lot of great places to visit. Careful with the parking spots, they're few and expensive. :) Also, if I were you, I wouldn't try the pizza there, it's average compared to what you can find in a normal pizza place/restaurant. Also, a ride with either a taxi-ferry/boat or a gondola is a must!

Kiddo.

piazza san marco....have a nice trip on a boat ...even though it's not so cheap...just have fun...

From the train station (Ferrovia) to the Rialto bridge. From the Rialto bridge walk to Piazza San Marco and visit St. Marks Basilica and the Doge's Palace. Take the vaporetto from St. Mark's to Burano and watch glass blowing. Then take the vaporetto back to the train station. That should occupy a whole day nicely.
