1 week in Rome in January? |
What type of clothing do we need to bring to visit Rome in January? We live in Tucson, Arizona, so we are used to casual attire for almost any occasion. |

We just got back from a week in Rome. We wore winter coats during the day and added a scarf and gloves for the evening. As far as clothing, we walked everywhere or took the Metro. For this reason, we wore comfortable shoes which for me is sneakers. So yes, they probably spotted me as a tourist. I figure since Rome is the most traveled city in the world, that was OK with me. I did not want to miss seeing something amazing because my feet hurt. There are cobble stones everywhere so wearing any kind of a heel is going to raise the risk of twisting your ankle. We ate dinner at six pm so the restaurants were empty anyway. The one night we ate at 7:30 we got the last table and my attire was not a problem. So, if you are there to do the sights and they are awesome, be comfortable. I never felt like a rube. Though, if you do want to dress like the Italian women, invest in skinny jeans and boots. Boots, boots, and more boots were everywhere. Have a great tme. |

I was in Rome last winer around Christmas and it was chilly but not really cold cold. I am from Chicago so the weather was warm for what I am used to that time of year. It's going to be anywhere from 30s to 50s F. It really doesn't get much colder than 30s in Italy. So I would suggest to take warm clothing and very good walking shoes. |

FFS what's with the names?

My former boss moved to Rome a while ago and he has advised that the weather is cold but bearable during the winter months.
Good quality woollen clothing, with a nice weatherproof jacket which will dry quickly should be all you will need for a few days in Rome at that time of year.
Make sure you take along warm socks and solid, comfortable footwear, because Rome is a wonderful city to walk around ~ in fact, in some places walking is the only real option.
If you are planning to go out in the evening, it is a good idea to take something a little dressy, because most Europeans dress more formally than I'm used to (Australia is a VERY casual place, by Euro standards!).
I went to an evening concert and was out of place dressed 'smart casual', BUT the Roman people are very well used to visitors and foreigners of all kinds, and are delighted if you make an effort, even if it does not entirely work. And the young people are very fashionable, but love their jeans and nice shirts, which are quite accepted in most places!
(The sort of 'formal' clothes most of the people my age were wearing are not things I could wear here in my everyday life, so buying anything like that would have been a waste for me.)
And of course ~ there are some wonderful shops, boutiques and stores in Rome, so if you don't have the exact clothes necessary ~ you will have the chance to buy some Italian fashions!
That's got to be a good thing, right!! :-)
Cheers :-) |

Italy is a land of style and fashion so you will be instantly recognised as Americans from Hicksville!
Where will you be staying, what social engagements will you have, what level of Society will you be mixing with?
Take your warmest clothing; anoraks, gloves, sweaters.
Divertirsi (have fun). |
