1st Anniversary/2nd Honeymoon trip: Italy or Spain? |
We had just purchased a condo the month b/4 our wedding our 9/6/08 wedding and therefore couldn't afford the European honeymoon that we had dreamed. However, we'd like to celebrate our 1st anniversary w/a 2nd honeymoon. We originally wanted to do a Spain, France, Italy tour but that was way too expensive. Then Spain and Italy, still too expensive. We decided to spend a little less time (a week instead of 10 days) and focus on what country. Again, we will be traveling the first week in September and are most definetly still on a pretty tight budget. With all that in mind which do you recommend, Spain or Italy? Additional Details I'm probably going to make a pro's and con's list so any details or explanations would be greatly appreciated! |

I would say Italy and, as first, Venice, is so romantic for honeymooners and persons loving each other deeply |

Tough decision. I'd say Spain, b/c you can drive to other countries. Unless you are staying in Northern Italy (and can do the same)...
I personally like Italy...but I was thinking in terms of seeing other countries as well..I know you want to focus on 1 country, but since you are there for 10 days, might as well try a short trip or two to another country. |

Since you have to choose just one, go for Italy. No doubts. Venice, Rome, Florence. Try http://www.scoobit.com which is to me the best website for hotels in Italy. You can book on line and there are no booking fees. Venice is indeed the perfect romantic destination to celebrate your (second) honeymoon; plan at least three days in Florence; for Rome you're gonna need another three days. Last but not least: keep in mind the most crucial aspect of choosing the perfect honeymoon destination is advance planning. Train' timetables avaiable at http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html - All the best |

I love both countries and have lived & travelled in both. Spain & Italy favorite counties and Venice & Madrid my favorite cities (besides NYC of course).
Venice is expensive but certainly romantic. You may consider staying in near by Padua or Treviso (much nicer cities than Mestre), where hotels will be less expensive, and making day trips to Venice. You'll also be within 3 hours (one way by train) to Milan & Florence. This is "close" enough for making day trips to both cities.
Madrid - is the city to party in at night late at night and well into the night. The Spaniards start eating (out) at 10pm then head out to the bars to party. The food & wine is great in Madrid (and the rest of Spain too for that matter). Accommodations in Madrid city cost much less than they would in Milan, Florence and or Venice and this would leave you more cash to enjoys yourselves. Madrid has some grand, 1st class world renown museums. It has a fantastic shopping district. The Spaniards in general are helpful (as the Italians) and easy to get along with. Train travel in Spain is as easy as it is in Italy and there are some great places to visit - all within about two hours from Madrid: Cuenca, Toledo and Guadalajara for example.
This is going to be a difficult decision for you... If I could afford to do both I would but if you want to have a good time and save some money then go to Spain. If Italy is a place that you've always wanted to see then - heck, it's your honeymoon GO FOR IT!
Let us all know what you decide.

It would be hard to go wrong either way.
Here in Italy, the vacation period is in August. Most people will be back and about everything will be up and running. The weather is generally pretty good and it isn't quite so crowded as the peak tourist season.
There are some interesting events. The Historical Regatta is held on the Grand Canal on the first Sunday in September. The Doge and his court are in full regalia in some very fancy boats leading the parade from the lagoon to the Grand Canal and then there are races in the evening. The Biennale will be going on this year in Venice too and that's always interesting. The main areas are in the garden and at Arsenale, but there are exhibits all over the city. The Venice Film Festival will also be running.
There's also the Giostra in Arezzo in early September. This is a jousting competition between the various neighborhoods with the prize being the golden lance. There are costumed parades leading up to the joust. Arezzo has a very good old town even when the joust isn't being held. There are several other places where there are events in medieval costume.
In a seven day period you could pretty easily hit Venice, Florence and Rome using the trains for travel and have time for a day trip.
You can find train schedules and prices here although the summer schedule won't be available yet:
