1) yes, you can; on trains where booking is mandatory (like Eurostars) you can still book before departures; of course the risk is finding all booked, yet. On other trains booking is possible but not mandatory (f.i. Intercity, Eurocity).

If you plan to travel just inside Italy, don't care about pass like Eurail or similar, just buy tickets from Trenitalia (online or at the railway station).

2) yes, you have to change once, but it's still the easier and more comfortable way to get there.

3) don't worry, jeans are common (you may also be shocked finding out the origin of words like "denim" or "blue jeans" :-)
You can find native people with any kind of dress, of course some common other rare (like t-shirts with words, a common question from tourists: there's nothing wrong with them, but simply in Italy are not much in use).

Train is your best option. Being that it rains frequently wear clothes that dry very fast, like dockers, bring a poncho, and a second pair of shoes, you don't want to have wet shoes on the second day.

OK- first of all, there are many diferent options as far as train travel goes. I HIGHLY recommend getting your tickets before you go. You will get a much better price and some options are only available here, not in Italy. By tickets, I mean a pass. This means you can go anywhere- although you will still need to get an actual ticket to board the train. So, it goes like this. You bought a pass here. You take your pass to the ticket booth and they issue a ticket. You save $$$.

Check with a travel agent- like at AAA, for instance (you do not have to be a member to use their travel services).

Italians do dress well. Jeans are OK, but you may want to re-think that if you plan on going to any nice restaurants.

IN ROME- Go to Campo de Fiore. There is a great cheap hotel- Albergo del Sole. You can walk to Vatican and other ruins, Spanish steps, etc are not far or a cheap cab ride.

Campo de Fiore is a great people watching piazza. By day, it is a farmer's market. At night, Italians walk about and there are plenty of wine bars. Nearby is fabulous fun shopping.

1- I can suggest you to book your train ticket because for some train it's compulsory to book anr you have the risk of not finding place . for other train is not compulsory but if the train is crowded you can't find a seat place and is tiring

3- It is true that in italy we like to well wear but we absolutely wear jeans that we like a lot and are very confortable!

3. Italians are very stylish, but yes, they do wear jeans. They wear them very stylishly ... erm.

Hi, I live in Italy. Enjoy your trip!

1. Yes, it's okay to buy your train tickets when you get here. You can either buy them at the counter or with one of the automatic machines you see inside the train station.

2. You can still take the train, but you'll have to change trains in Chiusi or another city. Or you could rent a car. I'm not sure if there are buses that go from Siena to Rome.

3. Yes, Italians dress well (compared to Americans at least). They are very much into fashion and looking nice. Jeans are okay. A lot of Italians wear jeans. Just wear the fashionable ones and not "mom jeans". =)

I'm italian, well, i cant tell you more of what have already been told...
I just tell you that i'm agree with the other italians... so, enjoy your trip, i hope you'll like here..!! come to visit turin, is a nice city..!!!

1. Yes, it's okay just to book there. Make sure you spend the little extra for the Eurostar it's a lot quicker.
2. Don't worry about direct, the trains are really prompt. Take the train, driving is horrible and renting a car is very expensive.
3. Dressing isn't as important as you think. When I was in Italy it seemed like there were more tourists and college students than Italians. Jeans are fine. The most important thing is comfortable walking shoes. If you plan on attending mass in some of the basillicas they will require a certain dress code, just check that out online.

people in the road dress as every body in the world, over all when you are traveling, take with you only one glad rag if you want to go in a fashion disco, other way don't worry about

1. Trains are ok. You can find tickets even the same day of travel, but I suggest you one day before. 2. you may change train in Chiusi...the trenitalia web site tells you all the options (http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html, just enter Siena as start and Rome as arrive) 3. jeans are ok...I'm sorry, but my english is not good...have a nice trip!
