Dress nice, leave your fanny pack at home =P Nice sunglasses and accesories (belts, purses, wallets) are a must.

Learn the language, there is nothing more annoying than seeing tourists trying to speak to locals in english.

Visit some important sites but take the time to visit some places off the beaten path. I love Orvieto(Umbria region) Naples and the Trentino/Alto Adige regions (The Dolomites). Be careful but make some friends your own age, Italians (no matter what age) are very very friendly people. Some of my best memories are simply hanging out with locals my age (18-25) in the Piazza (local square/meeting place) and simply talking, playing football(soccer)...just having a good time.

Make sure you know where your personal belongings are at all times....There are a lot of Gypsies just waiting to rip off anyone (even locals) including children. If your carrying cash.....keep it somewhere where it is hard to take. In the smaller towns you won't have to worry so much....in bigger towns/cities just watch your surroundings and you will be fine.

Try the local food, every region has distinct foods. No matter where you are in Italy there are resturants that serve fresh/delicious food. The Ice Cream (Gelato) is the best. I love trying different places and finding my favorite place, it is cheap too =D.

Enjoy your trip to Italy =)

Learn Italian (or at least learn how to say 'I don't speak Italian)
Take tampons because I had a difficult time finding any
If you go in the summer it's pretty hot
Download the metro map/guide before you go and figure out how you will get to where you want to go (that's for Rome at least)

1. Don't discuss politics.
2. Don't discuss soccer unless you want to brag about the local team(s).
3. Don't discuss religion.
4. Don't say how much better things are where you come from (if you must then highlight the difference).
5. Don't get drunk in public.
