Mrs P

A honeymoon in Italy, any suggestions?

I'm so excited. We have decided to go to Italy on our honeymoon, but we're not sure of where to go in the country, or what type of honeymoon to have.

One thing we thought we could do is fly into one of the major airports, then go by train from place to place as it seems a super opportunity to visit all those wonderful places we've only read about, go to the opera, etc .

However, another possibility that suits our personalities would be to go somewhere quiet, self-cater, and hole up for a couple of weeks or three, preferably by a coast somewhere, enjoying the food etc.

I've never been to Italy, and my fiance has only been once, and that was really passing through, so I though I would ask here.

We will both be in our early 40s and don't like resorts much. We do like fishing, food, coasts, music, art, reading, fabrics, cooking.
Thank you in advance

We'll be going in March-ish

Everyone always goes to the same places...Rome...bla bla....
let me suggest you go where no one rarely talks about ....go Rome down instead of Rome and up, I know up is beautiful too, but so much is in south Italy that is absolutely magnificent!
I can only list some places , I do come from Italy and know it well.
There is Bari: Alberobello and the Grotte di Castellano , a wonderous marvel of nature rarely talked about by usa tourists.
Bagnara Calabra is at the tip of Italy so nice and romantic
you can see the islands from there, Sicily the isles Eolie, imagine looking at islands from hotel and from the beach, islands you can reach and be there in a couple of hours.
Amalfi, the Amalfi coast! absolutely breathtaking.
Positano.....wow! in Salerno.http://www.panoramio.com/photo/355086
Go to Sicily : to Taormina! must see!!!!
situated up high it is coastal town with breathtaking views, artigians out working early in am and the smell of espresso and fresh bread from the villa balcony....
...so much more....
Congrats and hope i helped!

Janie's Got A Gun
You could go to Naples, Pompei, Ercolano and Capri.
Good food, beautiful landscape and nice people.
Or maybe also in Tuscany.Florence, Pisa, Livorno and cities like those.
If you're lookin'for art and food Italy is the place to go.

ciccibella
you must go to rome, venice and florence! italy is wonderful and these cities are so romantics! i know that 'cause i'm italian!

In Italy you should visit Rome, Florence and Venice. THey are the best sights. from Rome to Florence you'll take about 2-3 hours by train, but Venice is in the North of Italy. It's a romantic town built on the sea. It's really picturesque!
THen other interesting sights are Pisa with its leaning tower, Tuscany is wonderful for the artistic heritage and nature as well as cooking and there arewonderful farm holidays or traditional hotels in towns (Florence, Pisa, siena, ecc.)
If you like the mountains go to Trentino or to the North.
Enjoy your holiday!

You are spoiled for choice. The distances between the most famous cities are actually quite great, so I would split the trip, half in one of the cities and some time in the countryside.

One starting point would be Tuscany - fly to Pisa, train to Florence spend a few days there and definitely visit the Uffizzi. From there, I also recommend the Cinque Terre, in the region of Liguria, the Italian riviera. You could either go self-catering or stay in an agriturismo - some offer courses in cooking and crafts if you are interested in such things.

Another fantastic place is Sardinia - it's absolutely beautiful and of course the food is fantastic.

Pollen is a killer and March and April in Italy. If you have asthma or severe allergies consider going earlier or later.

The Lake Region up North is nice and doesn't get packed with tourists before June. There you have quiet fishing and boating. Further South, Tuscany has a lot to offer in all areas of your interests. Florence, Pisa, Lucca, Pistoia, and Bologna offer food, shopping, and art. Shopping in Milan is as good as it gets anywhere in the world, but can be expensive. Milan also has one of the most famous opera houses in the world. No matter where you go, it is very hard to find bad food. Try bread and breakfast places (pensione) for some interface with the Italians. You get a free breakfast and some places away from big cities offer a community table diner as well. The outside Leather Market in Florence is a chance to bargain and get a good price on leather goods. Fabrics in Genoa are fantastic.

I lived over there for over three years and shouldn't have left. Enjoy your time in Italy whatever you choose!

I've been to Italy many times, it's a great choice for a honeymoon.

Fly into Rome first. You don't say where you live, so if you're outside of Europe, you'll probably need to fly into Rome anyway.

I'd spend a few days in Rome - great architecture, food, visit the Vatican etc.

Then drive south to Napoli (Napels) where you can visit Pompeii which is the ancient city distroyed by a volcano. You can see mummified human remains, and walk all the way through the city.

Then go south again to Sorrento. It's a very romantic city on the coast. Great food again (but most of Italy is!) and you can take a boat out to the Isle of Capri. It's a lovely relaxing area and should be nice in March.

An other option is to head North of Rome and vist Pisa to see the leaning tower of Pisa (don't bother spending more than half a day there), then onto Florence (called Firenze in Italian).

You could then drive north through Milan and onto Lake Como. It's a beautiful inland lake where the rich and famous go to holiday. Very romantic and peaceful.

I'd also visit Assisi on the way back to Rome which is where Saint Frances of Assisi has some beautiful churches dedicated to him. It's an amazing town.

You can find all these places by using Google Earth maps.

SORRENTO!!!!! Beautiful city.
The Isle of Capri is the most beautiful, amazing place I have ever been. There is a goregous hotel there, overlooking the ocean and cliffs, called Hotel Luna. I have not been in the hotel, but it is amazing from the outside!

I'm italian and I think that VENICE is the best place for your honeymoon!!!!:):):) it's so romantic!!

Hi!
I'm an italian girl and I'd like to give you some suggestions:
Venice: it's a romantic city, beautiful, but pay attention, because it's really expensive (100€ for a "gondola ride")

Rome: I think it's the most wonderful city I've evr seen! Rom is really romantic for a honeymoon, but also interesting if you want to have a cultural view of Italy too.
The prices, to be honest, are really high in Rom, but I think it's worth for such a journey in this city!

Florence: This city is really caotic, however is culturally amazing, because you can observe the paintings, the sculptures and the architectural projects of the most important artists of the whole world!

This three cities are, in my opinion, the nicest to visit.
Anyway, Florence is the best if you don't want to spend too much money...

My advice is to leave for Florence, stay there for 2-3 days, than take the ferry and go to the beautiful Isola D'elba... finally, if you want, you could have a look to the wonderful island Capri and Ischia!

Have a lucky marriage!

Sorry if the language is not so good...

Hi, I'm italian and I think it's very nice and cute travelling by train...... You can arrive in Turin, it's a nice town, romantic and there are lots of things to visits. After a few days in Turin you can go by train to Florence for a couple of days.... The sea is quiet near to Florence, in Tuscany there are the white beach near Grosseto.... The return can be planned from Rome so you can stay a few days there....

Wish you all the best for your wedding

You don't say what time of year.
We came back from the Lake Garda area (we stayed in Malcesine, at the Majestic Palace which I can recommend) a couple of weeks ago, with visits to Venice and both a day time and Opera night visit to Verona in the Roman amphitheatre which was awe inspiring as you say you like music.
The Summer months are very, very hot, so make sure wherever you go, that you have air conditioning.
Venice is also very humid, as you might expect.

Verona (where Romeo and Juliet lived) would be a very romantic place for a honeymoon, or nearby Venice, which does have a beach as well as a wealth of cutural heritage

Hello, please do yourself and your future husband a big favor and erase the thought about going to spend your honeymoon in either Jesolo or Venice. Do Venice on a 2 day trip, of course because it still is the romantic city. Everything that inludes the word LIDO in an Italian towns name, stay away, because you will be greeted by miles of crowed beaches and else.

Verona is reaches in an hour by train from Venice, so do day trips, Padua is nice aswell.

Suggestion! Spend some days or weeks in and around Cinque Terre! It is hard to get it more beautiful and Italian. The 5 towns are crowded of course, but there is a place called Porto Venere, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO like CT. (just been there myself) which is as beautiful as Cinque Terre and just a 2 hour hike south. Porto Venere and Cinque Terre offer all kinds of accommondation like hotels, B&Bs and appartments. It is at the coast and from there you can do trips to Florence, Pisa and Bologna. See the photos and check the websites. For bookings anywhere you go in the world, use http://www.hostelz.com (has all kinds of accommondation) or
http://ww.hostelworld.com . Wishing you two all the best for the wedding and future.

Hi dear I suggest you to go in Italy for 2 weeks and to use one week to visit two cities and the other week to go on the sea. The classical tour for honey moon is: Visit Rome and Naples and after go to Capri and to Costiera Amalfitana, with its wonderful village MaJori, Minori, Amalfi, Positano, Cetara. An alternative could be visit one of the big Italian islands Sicily or Sardinia, but Sicily is the best: ancient art, paradise of sea and mountain. Another location, not very tourist, but really fantastic is Apulia. If you need information, write me
