You might totally hate this idea, but it was made famous by the movie The Holiday (Kate Winslet, Jude Law. Haven't seen it? It's adorable).

In either case, you swap with someone who actually lives there for a certain amount of time. It's definitely worth checking out considering it would be free to swap, as far as I know.

That might be a good way to get over to Italy, cheap and for a while, to speak with some travel agencies over there. However, I'm not sure which cities are cheap or not for housing.

Tuscany.It has beautiful scenery, nice peple, quite Roads ,peaceful villages with a lot to see in Towns like Siena and Florence.
I would try to rent an apartment or a small villa on a farm. They have very resonable prices as well.
