Advice booking train from Venice to Rome?

How much in advance should this be done? Approximate cost - was on Trenitalia but couldn't find prices for 1st class ticket. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A random search of trains from Venice to Rome, through the TrenItalia website, shows an estimated cost of 80.80euros for a standard 1st class ticket. This price might vary depending on the train selected, and type of ticket.

Here is the English TrenItalia website: http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/ferrovie/util/inglese.jsp
Just enter the departure and destination stations, and estimated departure time; you will get a list of trains; select the one you want and click BUY; this will give you a page of variable eg type of ticket, number of people travelling etc. You should be able to buy most tickets online.

Whether you buy in advance or not depends on the time of year. If you're travelling very soon, then buy a ticket now. If later in the year, it will not be so busy.

Hello,

You can wait until a day or two before you need the tickets to buy them. You won't have any problems as this is a very popular journey and there are trains that leave every hour. Trenitalia only publishes their schedule 2 months in advance so if you were looking further than that then you wouldn't see anything for sale. Try putting in an earlier date but use the same day of the week to check the fares. I checked and the amica fare for 1rst class is 64.60.

If you live in North America you will have problems purchasing tickets on the site. Their system does not accept credit cards that aren't from european countries. Just wait until you get to Itlay, then go to a train station, use the self service booth and purchase all the tickets you need. You can print out a copy from the trenitalia site of the options you like to help you with the decision when you are in Italy. Also, it is helpful if you have to have someone help you make the reservations at the desk. You can show them exactly the train you want.

There is an American Express office 300 ft from the NW corner of St. Marks Square (Piazza San Marco). I purchased my train tickets to Rome there for 1/2 price the on-line rate. They only take cash or American Express.

In 2002, when I purchased the tickets they were $79 on-line and $45 at AMEX. Today the on-line price is $89 each so I'm guessing the AMEX price will be about $55.

You can always purchase them at the train station or on-line for that matter.

This spring I did purchase tickets from Milan to Nice and Nice to Paris at the raileurope website and had no problem with my credit card except that on top of the inflated price I had to pay $18 for Fedex delivery.

Here is the link.

If your seat is RESERVED then you won't have problems... remember people use the train to go to and from work there.
If your seat is NOT reserved then you might end up with out one.
good luck
