Airport in Venice? |
My itinerary for a summer trip includes Venice, Parma, Florence, Rome, and Sorrento.
I'd like to fly directly into Venice from the USA so I can just go south for each next destination, but I am worried the airport will be small and so will the plane (my mother is terrified of flights, but I am convincing her to go to Italy on the idea that international flights are on bigger planes so there is less turbulence. Is this still true if you fly into Venice?)
If I flew into Rome, I'd certainly get a bigger plane, but I don't know how I'd organize my itinerary starting from a middle destination. I could go from Rome to Venice or Sorrento and THEN start, but then I'd have to take a small flight from Rome to Venice or Sorrento, which gives me the same problem of a small plane.
Suggestions?
Is the Venice airport/airplanes small? |

Venice airport is not too big, but it has international flights with big airplanes if you come directly from the States.
if you want to Rome from Venice, though, you are gonna have a smaller airplane....you might want to take a train: it's about 6 hours of train ride |

Venice Airport is an International one, with all the required safety features for big Aircraft like those on Intercontinental routes. There’s a daily flight from New York

So don’t let that deter you from planning to fly into Venice.
Rome and Milan, of course, have many more daily flights, from many more US points of embarkation, which would increase the chances of getting a reasonably priced ticket. What I suggest is you ask your travel agent for a multi stop ticket, ending in the Southern most destination. That would mean: US-Rome-Venice-Milan-US, on a single ticket and a Tourist Rail Pass for all the other places you want to visit, with the exception of Sorrento-Amalfi where you can get a 1-2 day Bus Tour.
Italian Domestic flights are usually B737 or MD 80's (140-50 seaters) depending on the Airline you take. Only Venice Milan could be smaller, according to the schedule, but you can choose the bigger one's departure if that deters you. |

The Venice airport isn't particularly large, but if you're on a direct flight from the US, you won't be on a real small plane. Another option would be to fly into Milan and take the train to Venice. You could do the same from Rome, but the train trip would be somewhat longer. Obviously, it's much more convenient to fly into Venice. You can use the Italian train website to plan travel throughout Italy. http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html |

Compared to some airports you could say it is small but I grew up in Nebraska so any airport is big to me. I flew out of Venice when I was living in Italy and the planes were fine. Big airlines like Lufansa fly out of Venice and their planes are large. It would be no different then flying into Rome. And the nice thing about Venice airpot is you can take the water bus to the grand canal. I hope you enjoy your trip! |
