Good question.
When I go home I try to find something that they don't have there. Some candy, that you can buy only here, some good whiskey.
Maybe something they like, hobby. You can focus on that too.
One cousin of mine is really into Native American stuff, so especially for him I get some Native American arts and crafts. Dreamcatcher or something like that.

Unique art gift is the best present.
There is a web site –photoartomation.com ( http://www.photoartomation.com ), they convert a digital photos into paintings of different art styles and print them on canvas.
My friend sent them a picture and they turned it into beautiful piece of art. I saw it and it really looks good.

This is a tough question because you can find everything you have in the States in Italy... EVEN chocolate chips & not too bad brownies!
Yes, as already mentioned - T-shirts with your city's name on it. make sure you don't take T's that are big enough for two people. Pick up a dozen western bandanas - these are good to give to the kids (boys & girls). Whiskey (already mentioned) you can pick up in the duty free. You may even want to pick up a few cigares or a carton of smokes (if you know your host's brand). Beef jerky makes a good gift - there isn't a big choice of it in Italy. A coffee-table picture book of your home town is an idea. Go to your local museum's shop to see if there are any unique items there.

They just love american stuff and american stuff over here is very costly, Sometimes is double what we pay in the states. If there is things you know they like bring that. If not they love american bakery like cookies, brownies and cakes. I know cakes are to transport but brownies they love and they dont have them here that I've seen. I dont know to many that like american wine but maybe some do. Even just like basic seuveniors like tshirts that say the city name on them they seem to like that. too

It depends on the age group you are dealing with. For my younger girl cousins Barbie dolls were a big hit. They also loved the tinted lip balm as well. For teenagers tee shirts with logos (Nike, Puma, team names) are acceptable. They like their clothes close fitting, so keep that in mind. For my aunts I went to an outlet store (Mikasa, etc) and purchased ring holders, small crystal picture frames, wine bottle stoppers, etc. They were small enough to carry on the plane but made a big impact with them. My uncles enjoyed the button down shirts (short or long sleeved) and for those who still smoked American cigarettes are still accepted. Aftershave and believe it or not the the older crowd, Ben-Gay, Tylenol and Aspirin. My aunts also loved rolls of tin foil and peppercorns. The rolls over there are small and way too expensive. Either way, anything you bring will be fine. Enjoy your family and your vacation.

Take them some American Souvenirs such as ELVIS MEMORABILIA, MARILYN MONROE, Ipods, American Candy, Souvenirs from your home town. I would not take them American wine, since Italians are kinda picky about the wine they drink -- I know this first hand. I'm sure anything you take them they will appreciate. It is the thought that matters. Oh, how about you take all them some Swatches, they love them watches.

Depends on what they like. I might bring the latest U.S CD's, because occasionally they release here earlier than they do in Europe.

Italians love things for the home. So, teatowels with your local hometown tourist designs, fridge magnets, pencil toppers for the bambini etc

We bring See's candy and home made chocolate chip cookies. They don't have chocolate chip packages available there so they can't make them the way we can!

say_no_2_religion
Clothing and toys that is popular here is usually accepted.

Find out what they like to be honest with you. Have they mentioned anything that they like from here?
Anyway go with my first statement.

Best of luck to you on your vacation.

P.S. What part of southern Italy?

they will totally love and be amazed to try a good Californian wine!

Good wine (>$25 per bottle, and with a cork!), modern vibrators, American (but made in China) candy, and the latest issue of Swank.
