You don't necessarily need a car to do this trip; the trains and buses will will cover quite a bit of the country and can be cheaper than driving if you're by yourself. What you should see depends a lot on your interests. It would be hard to go wrong though. Personally, I'd like to have enough time off to do a sagre tour - just head out and hit all the small towns with local festivals for a month or so. There are a large number of them right now just in Emilia Romagna where I live and thousands throughout the year all over the country.
I would highly recommend Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast, but there are a lot of other beautiful places. For example, Polignano al Mare is a scenic town on the coast south of Bari. The area around Lago Garda is nice. Pompeii is fascinating and much larger than I had thought it would be before the first time I visited. All the major cities are worth the trip - Florence, Rome, Venice, and Naples. ...but smaller places like Mantova, Ferrara, Padova, Lucca, Arrezo, Bergamo, Orvieto, and Tivoli are also good destinations. It would be hard to go wrong no matter where you go.
There are hundreds of sites with good photos of Italy. A couple of good ones are:

Keep the right side! If you will come with a car, reaching the bottom of Italy descend from the right side, passing Venice, Emilia Romagna, Marche, Abruzzo down until Puglia, then you can reach Sicily or turn over to Naples, Rome and so on. Some nice shots of the east coast in www.en.conero.it |
