In Milan it is beautiful to see the Teatro alla Scala (the opera house). Even if one is not lucky to get a ticket one can visit the buidling (small opera museum) and get a glimpse into the auditorium. It is antique and full of atmosphere, breathing history. Also the cathedral is a wonderful building and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuelle II. One should not go to Milan on a public holiday as the city is quite deserted then.
In Florence there are many ancient churches, museums (feet-tiring!) and one could go to Fiesole (Bus no 7, departing from the train station) and see the Roman Theatre.
Of course shopping and food are great in both cities, but do not expect bargains - both cities are quite expensive! |

im italian so you cn defo trust me..
Firenze
Uffizi Gallery (Galleria degli Uffizi), an art gallery featuring Renaissance like Botticelli, Titian, Michelangelo and da Vinci. Definitely the Cathedral of Santa Maria dei Fiori or the 'Duomo'
Then Galleria dell'Accademia which is a school of art that's a museum now. Basilica di San Miniato al Monte, is a hill (Monte) duh... From there u cn c lots of views of around.
Milano
Cathedral (Duomo), Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II an Architectural building, La Scala Opera (Teatro alla Scala), opera theatre/ museum, Santa Maria della Grazie Religious site; Historic site; Architectural building and then the Castello Sforzesco which is an old castle... THEN THE SHOPS!!lol i think thats about everything. I hope they enjoy their trip.

I'd skip Milan or spend just one day there. Milan can't possibly compare to Florence. |

I love Florence and have been there 4 times.
The Duomo is the main attraction. If you are feeling energetic a walk up inside the dome is worthwhile, or failing that but equally tiring is a trip up the Campanile.
The monastery of San Maro is where you will find the fantastic Fra Angelico frescos in the individual monks' cells.
My favourite church in Florence is San Miniato al Monte, a bus ride up into the hills above Florence. Lovely church, stunning views.
Then of course there's the Uffizi, which would take a day. |

Insider's tip:
When in Florence, take the bus to Fiesole ( as already recommended in another answer ), and visit the cathedral; it closes during lunch times. Stunning. Try the acoustics, if you find yourself to be alone there, by climbing up to the elevated altar and choir and singing something there.
As for Milano: yes yes yes, La Scala ( the opera house ), Europe's best !!

In Florence, I reccomend the Duamo, the Museum where David's at, and the many Piazzas. |

Florence - Medici palace, Ufizzi, Academia museums... Dante Alleghieri's house. Definitely eat some gelato. The dome of course, and the tower. shop shop shop! Be careful though... I was approached by a very good looking guy who I think was trying to rip me off. Fortunately I was prepared... had my money belt well tucked away under my clothes, and there was nothing he could do. He was nice looking and clean cut, but he seemed to be working with about three other guys who looked like punk rockers. My thought is that he was planning to distract me while... well, you get the idea. |
