Enjoy. The weather in Rome and Florence is similar to San Francisco at that time of the year. So dress accordingly.
I am not sure of what your likes or dislikes are so I'll tell you my choices. In Rome I definitely visit The Borghese Museum you need a reservation but it is the best museum in Rome. Tour the ancient city (Forum and Coliseum) , the Vatican is nice but huge. needs lots of time. A nice church (small) is St. Maria Vittoria the art work is magnificent. Take a walking tour of the Corsi for shopping. Visit the Spanish Steps (the street across from the fountain at the foot of the steps has all the fashion stops. from Prada to Louis Vat?? Dior (My wife's favourite stop). See the Trevi Fountain.
Go to Florence my favourite top spots the Ufizii, the Pitti Palace, the Gellato (Ice cream) is the best in the world.
Best secret in Florence is Fiesole (a small village in the hills above Florence) Take the #7 bus from the train station for a 1/2 hour ride to the town visit the ruins and take walk to the monastery above the town.

Enjoy.

Edit.
I typed the above late last night and my spelling was atrocious. Spell Check wasn't working for some reason. any way gelato (one l ) in Firenze is second to no where else in the world. My favourate gelateria is just to the north of the Ponte Vecchia (Old Bridge) on the east side of the road. Make reservations for the museums. They cost a couple of Euros each but same hours in waiting. Lineups are unbelievable. Ask at the desks in your hotel for reservations and for restaurants. They love their cities and want to share their knowledge.
Good value are the Hop on Hop off tour buses. Bargain in Rome is the BIG billet for the Bus and Metro Ride all day for 3 or 4 Euros.

I loved Rome and Florence. I am full Italian, and have been there twice!

Don't pack too much....save room in your luggage, or pack an empty bag that you can fill up and bring back home. You'll probably buy a ton of stuff. Definitely bring something warm though, as it can get pretty cold in February. They dress pretty nice in Italy...they never look sloppy. Bring your camera!

learn simple italian words, it could be very useful. I suggest you use the subway to go around Rome.

i dont know which aspect you wold like to know, hotel? transportation..? what i would like to remind you is that in both Roma and Firenze, you must keep your wallet well
in very safety position, that means make it not to be easily taken by any other people, the same is your ID and passport.
i was stolen 2 times in the two cities, taken away $3000, and passport ( which they returned to me later, but not every Gypsy would be so kind to do this). when you see Gipsy kids ( aged 10 -18 ), or woman ( smetimes holding a baby), appoaching you, simply look at their eyes and get around from them, dont let them be very close to you.in this case, they realize you are not "naieve" target then would turn to try other targets. Mind you once you allow them be close to your body, 90% of the chance is that your wallet is gone, or almost gone.

tomjc43 has the perfect answer. but when you ask for an icecream, if you don't want to look stupid, there is only one L, gelato.
