Yes I lived there for almost 3 years. Yes, everyone speaks Italian, some also speak english (probably b/c of the military base there). AND NO, the people are not like the movies..The people I have encountered were kind and once they got to know me, were even nicer to me. They love children. (My daughter was born there)

If you are moving there, you'll love it. Buy a Rosetta Stone language CD, book or whatever. Learn basic phrases and enjoy it! We did!

Everything is "Ciao Bella or bedda (Sicilian dialect)" how bad could that be? ^_^

my husband is from Sicily, Catania to be exact.

Its beautiful there... but seasons are very dramatic, summer time is very very hot... hotter than new york.

yes... everyone speaks italian, but most speak the sicilian - catanian dialiect... this is a different dialect then regular italian.

how exactly do the movies perceive them to be?

i dont know what that means... my husband is sicilian and most sicilians are big family people and prideful, geloso... some say.

I'm italian, not from Sicily, I'm from Napoli and live in Tuscany. I've been in Sicily many times. Sicilian people are probably the most friendly and warm-hearted people in world and Sicily is a miracle of natural and cultural beauty. Not sure a life can be defined a real life if you haven't seen Sicily. Any sicilian speaks italian of course, plus most speak sicilian too, but that means nothing, sicilian is just a dialect, but all sicilians speak italian, they are italian lol. For the movie stuff, any sicilian is different from another. Why don't u try to be more specific? What exactly do you want to know about them.

I suggest the baroque triangle: Ragusa Ibla, Noto and Modica.
Those are almost undiscovered perls.
