Are Genova, Italy, and Genoa, Italy, the same city just referenced in different ways?

OK, this is actually quite funny. I am American, but lived in Italy for one year - in Genova/Genoa! When I got there, I was not sure of the difference, either, but quickly learned that they are, in fact, the same. Most maps in Europe have it written as "Genova," while maps in English refer to it as Genoa. And the English version is pronounced with the accent on the first syllable, unlike some people I hear pronounce it with the accent on the second syllable. The same goes with the Italian version - with the accent on the first syllable.

"Genoa" is the English spelling; "Genova" is the Italian spelling. Same city, same great food and wonderful people!

They are the same city.

Yes, they are the same city.
The Italian spelling is Genova.
The English spelling is Genoa.
I don't know why the "v" is dropped in English. Pretty silly!
My family and I were driving through Italy this summer and got lost in Genoa/Genova.... people there were so nice and helpful there!
