Oh my yes. Venice is a wonderful walking city. There are streets, piazzas (paved squares),and lots of twisty lanes. The streets are not meant for vehicles, so while there are a few delivery trucks, most stuff is boated in and delivered right to the door of the business from the boat. You can walk and walk in Venice. It is a beautiful place to explore.

In addition to the walking areas, there is a road across the causeway to Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto where there's a big parking structure. You can also take the car on ferry to the Lido island and there are "normal" streets there. As someone else said, Venice is a great place for walking. In addition to all the famous landmarks, there are small icons, art, and interesting architectural features everywhere you go.

To the Island of Venice, there is a train/roadway bridge which terminates in an industrial type area with the train station and cruise port. The road, Ponte Della Liberta, extends a little further than that. After the bridge hits the island, there is about 2 miles of drivable surface you may call a road - most of this is access for trucks to the port. I've never traveled on any of these roads and I find the boats and the walking paths charming.

The Island of Lido is about 7.5 miles long and about 1/4 mile wde. The people there do own cars. Apparently they didn't like my idea of putting a street car up and down the middle of the island that would meet everyone's transportation needs.

I don't believe there are any roads that could handle cars in Murano or Burano at all.

You have to distinguish between the main islands of Venice, around San Marco and Venice Lido. The Lido is a lovely island with “normal” houses and bungalows, hotels and a pleasant beach, all structured with “normal streets”. You get there from Venice proper, from San Marco and the main islands (I’ll spare you the cute names). When you arrive in a train or by bus or car, you stop at Piazzale Rome, at the end of a causeway linked to the mainland. From there it’s via Ferry boat (normal “water-busses”) speedboats or individual gondolas. At each stop you can find dozens of small, ancient and narrow streets, threading through the entire city. I agree with the other reply it’s great fun walking all round Venice in the Calle (local street name), but be careful to take a GPS with you, every time I visit Venice, I tend to get myself lost, even though I know most of the landmarks.
It’s one of the most unique towns (can anything be more unique, than unique) I’ve ever visited.
