Does anyone know if there are any supermarkets in Venice, (preferably near St Mark's Square)? It would make a change from eating at a restaurant every night when we go there later this year. |

Yes, there are small and medium supermarkets everywhere at town. They sell food & household articles, or clothes. Anyway, you can by food in groceries, fruit and vegetable shops too.

Yes, there are some supermarkets (small supermarkets) and I remember seeing one close to San Marco. Just ask when you're there. |

there are several supermarkets in Venice. Not very many around the SM Square. You'll have to walk on down to Castello (Via Garibaldi) and you find one or two. The biggest might be the Billa - one on Strada Nuova between Rialto and the train station and one next to San Basiglio at the end of the Zattere.
You are so right to try out the supermarkets. The wines and booze in general will cost nearly 60% less than in the restaurants. Bread is always fresh and the cold cuts the best!

so... first of alla excuse me for my English, but I'm Italian...
There are so many littleshops near San Marco's Square but they're expensive like the restaurants!
if you want something good you can go to the COOP (piazzale roma, giudecca, and near Giorgione's cinema) or BILLA (Ca' D'oro or Zattere)...
or, in the mornings from tuesday to saturday there's a market in rialto, where venetians go... it sells vegetables, fruits, fish....
Felps's answers is non correct because many supermarkets that he posts are out of venice, in mestre!!!!!!!!!!! |

When I saw this question I almost answered No! but then I remembered seeing a couple of medium sized grocery stores when I last visited (October) but the usual shopping in Venice are in small speciality shops. That is the joy of Venice itself. Finding a little shop that specializes in cheeses, a salami deli, a wine shoppe, and a bakery. There we go instant meal. Careful though . Venice is not like other Italian cities there aren't a lot of parks to picnic in. In fact the city is going to be crowded. Guaranteed. |

No real supermarkets because there's not enough room on the island, but there are several small markets and bakeries around. If you take the train off the island to the town of Mestre you'll find a supermarket which won't be as costly as the shops on the island!

The open air market at Rialto is fairly close to Piazza San Marco - there are stalls with fruit and vegetables Monday - Saturday in the mornings until noon. I often stop there or at another market closer to the train station when I go to Venice for the day. There are other open air markets and lots of little shops in Venice as others have mentioned. You can also pick up panini or bruschetta at several shops or bars in the vicinity.
There's also a good pizza by the slice place a couple of blocks from Piazza San Marco thats relatively inexpensive - take the exit from the piazza right next to Quadri. Go across the bridge and follow the street - the pizza place will be on the right before you get to the next bridge. |
