Are there lots of gypsies in venice?

i'm going to italy for my birthday. I'm mostly going to venice but i'm also going to other parts of italy.

my friend told me there were lots of gypsies in venice and italy and they beg and pickpocket and steal. are there? lol i dont mean to sound stupid but they sound kinda frightning...

Just be careful. In Venice there aren't lots, but tourists are a must for pickpockets, so don't leave your purse open and hold it firmly. If you're going to other cities, like ROme, gypsies are going to be a lot more. Just be very careful when you're in stations, buses, trains... the usual places...

I don't remember seeing them there in numbers like I see in Rome and Florence.

I'm used to beggars in the US with a cardboard sign on the off ramp and I wonder to myself if this is one these guys who makes $60K a year doing this and they don't accept food, just money.

While I was sitting on steps of the Duomo in Florence a petite Italian woman sat down next to me with 2 large pieces of pizza and a coke. When she was almost done a Gypsy came to her and asked for the rest of her food - which she ate.

They are noted for their thievery - a little child getting your attention while another takes your stuff... Cutting a slit in the bottom of your purse to get at valuables. If you're wary and suspicious of strangers you won't have a problem.

well i don't think so just be care full and stay with your friends or family and don't go down any seedy dark lanes or go off with any one you don't know so in other words be sen sable girl and you will have a great time so good luck and happy birthday..
