August is hot and (still) considered the vacation month for most Italians. You'll need to avoid the beaches during the summer... unless like the crowds. The cities are hot too but less crowded. An Italian Alpine vacation in August is a great idea. Sunny & cool, a dip in the lakes, good food....
December - Rome would be full of festivities - Venice it's Christmas markets in its various campos (open squares). It's cold in Venice in December and less so in Rome.
Which is better August or December? This is up to you on the type of vacation you enjoy. Any time of the year is just fine for me! |

If you plan on doing a lot of shopping August is not the month for you. Many shops actually close in August because that is when Italians go on vacation. It is also extremely hot during that time. |

December is much better. It is so much nicer to put on an extra jacket and gloves than to walk around sweating your butt off and not an air conditioner in sight! Also, stuff is WAY cheaper in the winter. You can get flights on ryanair.com for a euro plus tax, so about 15-20 euro. Check www.trenitalia.com for train schedules, you can ride the train from Venice to Rome for probably about 30-40 euro. |

sorry to tell you that both months are not the best
August is very hot and the city is super crowded.
December it's pretty cold and staying out isnt as much fun.
If i had to chose between those 2 months i would go by Xmas time cause there would be lights and Xmas trees and holiday athmosphere...
Boths months are expensive to visit Venice but i think August would be worse |

I think December because the scenery is beautiful, the temperatures are pleasant and there are relatively few crowds. ..Try to avoid August, as this is the time that most Italians take their vacations, and many shops and businesses are closed as a result. It's a peak season so expect that it's hot and crowded.
Cheers! ♥ |

I agree with the December option, August is too hot both in rome and venice, and venice can also be very smelly.
However even if August is the holiday period for the Italian you probably will not see many "locals" in rome and venice since they prefer to go on the sea. The problem is that the week of the 15th of August you may find place closed in both rome and venice.
As for december it is a better period and it may also not be to cold, however xmas period is considered high season so if could anticipate the date to the 1st week of december it would be much better |

I've done a lot of traveling around Europe and August is the worst month you can go. It's hot as 3 hells and 2 demons, and it is a pain to go anywhere as it is the height of tourist season. December maybe rather cool but there will be no long lines. Which means you can see more. And there is all kinds of stuff to see. |

August is too hot & crowded, maybe December. (--,)
ADD:
Italy is at its best in spring (April-May) and autumn (October-November). During these seasons, the scenery is beautiful, the temperatures are pleasant and there are relatively few crowds. Try to avoid August, as this is the time that most Italians take their vacations, and many shops and businesses are closed as a result. |
