Base town in Tuscany - would you recommend Siena?

We are looking at staying in Florence for two nights and then spending a week in Tuscany visiting some of the hill towns etc. We will have a rental car.
Siena has been suggested as a good base town. Would you suggest staying inside or outside the walls and is there another base town you would recommend over Siena for a young couple travelling with a car?

It is a very pleasant destination, nice town baricentric and connected pretty well by freeway to Florence (careful to speed cameras!). From Siena you may visit a lot of interesting and characteristic towns, as San Gimignano, Volterra, san MIniato, Monteriggioni, surprising fortress-town lost in the countryside, Montalcino (very nice opportunity to buy some bottles of Brunello....) but also nice small towns as Pienza, San quirico d'orcia...since you have got a rental car, would be a pity to not use it, southwest of siena you can get lost in Chianti area...with the characteristic hills...changing colours depending by weather...you will be a bit offside for Pisa, Lucca and the sea area....but you can't see everything in one week. Siena is nice inside walls...but I guess about pleasant nice hotels at reasonable price... you may consider to book in some nice country hotel or relais in some town in the surroundings...downtown hotels may be more expensive and create you some trouble with access/parking.
I live 90 kms south of Siena and the whole area is really beautiful. If you plan to visit Tuscany in May/June it will be best period...not yet invaded by tourists....warm sun and not so hot, touristical places not stressed by crowd....have a ncie and pleasant trip over here!!

Siena is a good choice for a base. There's easy access from there to a lot of the smaller hill towns in the Chianti wine area and there's a lot to see and do in Siena itself depending on exactly when you're there. You can easily get to San Gimignano, Voltera, Montepulciano, Monteriggioni, and other towns. While you're out exploring, go see the Abbadia a Isola. The last time I went for the weekend, there was a large, very good multicultural festival that was pretty interesting. I'd stay inside the walls there.

I suggest Lucca as a base town, because it is small and quaint, but still easy to access and such. It's very beautiful, and there's not as much chaos as in big cities such as Sienna.
