some of the airlines tell you they're flying to milan when they actually land in bergamo. it's a town in two halves, the bottom is a normal nice italian town, with park, town hall, bars, restaurants etc.
then you go up the funicular to the old part; pretty, touristy, a bit like mont st michel, or carcassonne in france - very old, very narrow streets, good restaurants.
we thought it was lovely.
the train into milan took about twenty minutes and cost only a few pound for three of us.
milan is a big modern commercial city - totally different.

hello i had been the a lot of time, i come from milano but i live in perth and before move in australia i had been there a lot. depend in which part of bergamo you had been. there is bergamo the ura (bergamo alta, bergamo up) and bergamo the ora (bergamo bassa, bergamo down)
bergamo Alta is old part of town and there are a lot of pubs, restourants and shops, this part of city is the expensive part.
Bergamo Bassa is little bit quite because all visitors and the bergamo people go in the other area of bergamo. in this part also there are a lot of pubs, restaurant and shop but are not all together same the hight part of city but there is a lot to do there.
there are a lot of disco outside the town too.
cheers

I don't live in centre but I lived quite near the airport, in grassobbio. what did you visit in bergamo? i suppose "città alta" (high city) that is fantastic! and sure I had to be in oriocenter, the better shopping center in italy... I love it!! and how it is say in "bergamasco" (in dialect) salut a tè e à la tò famea! (goodbye to you and your family) thank you for comiiiiiiiiingg

i've been to bergamo...it isn't particular great...try with rimini o milano marittima(cities full of teenagers) or naples and rome for a cultural travel.
