Best Way to Travel in Italy?

Agree with the first answer, do a tour through Insight vacations etc, or travel by train

The best, and for me really the only, way to travel is by train. However this depends on distance, as from Milan to Rome can be quite long (remember, Italy is a long thin country). There are cheaper flights from Rome to Milan you can check out, but if you have time, you can also take a train to Milano. Eurostar trains are faster but are more expensive, and I would avoid renting a car, as not only is driving a bit crazy in Italy, but parking is very hard. Almost everyone uses the train system, it easy and takes you to the center of the cities you want to see.

The trains are a piece of cake in Italy. Milan to Rome may be a long train ride, but it is really easy and inexpensive. Make sure that you spend the few extra bucks for the Eurostar. The time saved is worth it. Don't worry about luggage on the train. They have overhead compartments and you can fit the large (we have an American Tourister set) luggage between the backs of the seats. If you do this do not buy your ticket in the US via internet or use a travel agent. It is A LOT cheaper to buy them in the Termini in Italy. I would suggest though that you purchase your tickets a day or two ahead of time. We (2 people) purchased tickets from Florence to Rome for 66 Euro total on the Eurostar. We purchased them the day before and had seats together, then the day of we changed our reservations to an earlier train (the breakfast wakes you up) we weren't sitting together. We had our whole luggage set with us. No problems. And it took little more than an hour.

Once you arrive at the Termini station I would suggest you take a Taxi. They are more expensive than the bus, but you are going to be tired from the train. It's easy to search for a bus without luggage. I didn't spend more than 15 Euro from a hotel to the Termini in any city, and I felt it was worth it. When you are travelling within the cities busses are fine, but with luggage I think it would be overwhelming.

I am not sure of the name, but Italy has an airline that flies around it. We chose not to use this because we wanted to see as much as we could, and couldn't have done that in the air.

In 4 people with luggage I guess you've no alternatives.
I would go by a rented car. Bus and train could be ok and convenient for max.2 persons but for 4 persons the cost of the tickets would be ugly higher than travelling by car.
Main towns are well connected by motorways and if you take care of avoiding to travel in the earliest or latest hours of the week-ends (and obviously end July/early August, when all the Italy is moving for holidays) you'll have no particular problems.
Try to avoid arriving in any city in the middle of the day,when they will be crowded for the traffic. If you travel early morning or late evening you'll limit a lot objective difficulties to cross unknown towns. When you are at destination park yr car there and visit that town by using public transports (not taxis as in Italy they're crazily expensive). Don't try to use the car to visit the town as the traffic would drive you crazy and also you'll never find where to park. Use the car just to move from one city to another one or in the neighbors of the towns but avoid the centre of all Italian cities.

when i was in italy, i travelled pretty much either by train or bus. i liked the train because its relatively cheap, safe, and fast.
