i also live in florence, its been over 4 years since i came. what school are you going to? i went to SACI (via antoninio?? something like that, its close to the train station) for a year 2002-03 and fell in love with florence. after the year was over i didnt want to leave so i applied to the unviersity of florence. and for the last 3 years ive been studying industrial design at the department in calenzano (a boring town way off off off the side of florence, dont even know why on earth they placed that department so apart from the center)
places to go? things to do? hmm...
i would say, take a bus (i think its the 6, not sure but check!) to fiesole, take a camera and you get to see the entire beautiful scenary of florence. if you ever date an italian guy he'll either take you there or to piazza michelangelo for a romantic spot. either way you can go during the day, have a walk and enjoy.
pay a couple euros and go to the top of the duomo, worth going!! again take the camera!
nightime, go to Space Electronics in via pallazzuoli (close to trian station and piazza santa maria novella) there are A LOT of italian guys there who want to meet american girls. i know its kinda cheasy, but im just telling you if your in the look out for meeting new italian guys. i, unexpectadly met the italian bf i am still with today after 4 years, in the most awkward situation. i spoke zero italian, he spoke zero english a nd i would have never guessed it end up like this. oh and its also free for international students, make sure you tell them your a foreign student.
every weekend, go check in either one of these piazzas: piazza della independenza, piazza santo spiritu, piazza (the one close to the post office close to piazza sant croce) almost every weekend they have kinda like flea markets in ONE of these piazzas, you have to check. and the cool thing is they sell antique stuff, i know it may seem kinda boring, but truthfully its really interesting looking at all these wierd antique gadgets that you oddly see back in the states. (im from calif., you only see this stuff in museums!) i love going to them and i collect mecanical calculators. (if your really interested i can send y ou a download of the schedules of everyone of these antique fairs through out all of tuscany)
go visit the boboli gardens in palazzo pitti. im so embarassed to say, but ive never gone there. everyone says its so beautiful and i keep saying to myself, 'oh! ill go ill go!' but i never end up. go and see and tell me at the end how it was.
nightime: go to Salamanca. its a real well known spanish restaurant close to santa croce. ask anyone around and theyll tell you where exactly its located. i have no idea of the street names. go there on a friday night EARLY IF IF your going to eat or else itd be full, or go late at night and grab a drink and chat with all the italians there, its always full there.
when you get a bf, if you do or not, or jsut do it for the darn fun of it, go to ponte vecchio, bring wiht you a little lock and lock it among with the others on either sides of the ponte in the center and throw the key to river.
go to my favorite restaurant called, Osteria delle Belle Donen in Via delle belle donne. tiny little restaurant, but the food is good and the atmosphere is adorable!
go to the san lorenzo mercato and go to the famous food rack thats infront of the lorenzo market building. its at a corner along with other leather and scarf carts and buy a "Panino di Lampredoto" tell them you want it with only the green sauce, not the hot sauce (unless you like hot sauce) and salt. its SOOOO good and its a florentine treat.
go to the san lorenzo market early early morning to buy some good veggies and fruits at good prices. make sure its in the morning, they close before noon.
go to cascine park on a tuesday afternoon to go shopping along the carts. they sell from cheap nice clothes to kitchen appliances to cute little gifs (CHECK first and find out wether they still do that on tuesdays, from what i recall they did it during the summer)
go to piazza michelangelo. its actually pretty boring, but if your into nice views and beautiful scenaries, then go. while you are there go visit the church of san miniato.

As in all of Italy, walking and exploring, taking in the sites is a great start. The museums and galleries there are fabulous. Eating in the most mundane of locations, or drinking a cup of cappuccino are wonderful pleasures in Italy, and Florence in particular.
Churches are wonderful to explore there as well. Even if you aren't religious, they are treasures. |
