Best cities to visit in Italy?

We are going to visit 2 cities in Italy this Summer and Rome is definitely going to be one of them. Any suggestions for the second one?
Florence, Venice, and Milan all sound great but it's so hard to choose just one!

I travelled to Italy last year and one of my favorite places was Verona. The city was charming and the architecture was beautiful. I loved seeing Juliet's balcony there. I also agree with Misha that Lake Garda is a wonderful place. I am from Ohio and sitting outside by the lake at an outside cafe in the sunshine was one of the highlights, and was great for people watching. Have fun!

Definitely Florence, just the dome itself is amazing, and don't leave without seeing Michelangelo's David. Also, you can't skip Rome, it is my favorite. if you like feeling like your're part of an ancient world, Rome is the place to be. It's an amazing city. I don't recommend Venice, it is very crowded, and other than a gondola ride and St Mark's square, its all a bunch of hotels and bridges and little shops.

Florence of course (even if Venice and Milan are very beautiful)!
Not far from Florence there are many other beautiful city such as Siena, Lucca, Pisa....and, sure, all tuscany countryside is wonderful (if you like sea go to the Argentario coast, south Tuscany)...

i am italian and ..i think that besides rome you must choose Venice,is so wonderful really!i think that by train you will take 5 hours more or less from rome to venice, while florence is closer just 2 hours...i can't say anything about Milan because i don't like it very much.

Positano, south of Naples, is my favorite place in Italy. Its not a city, but shouldn't be missed if you are going to head to souuthern Italy. Its a gorgeous, cliffside town, with delicious food and super-nice people.

Florence, Id say. Venice gets kinda crowded during summer. Milan is also beautiful...

well for me, one of the most beautiful place ive been to is the Lake Garda. The city. The mountains. The lake. The breeze. It was just so beautiful.

lovetuscany
why don't you choose to go to the countryside near Florence and visit the city? look at www.ariannandfriends.com

bob shark
I would choose Florence of those mentioned, but I would rather see Cinque Terre (5 towns) on Amalfi Coast.

Don't bother with Milan. No offence to anyone from Milan, but from a tourist point of view it's over rated. I would also recommend Naples if you want to head south rather then north. It is not far from Rome, and you can take a trip from there to visit the ruins of Pompeii.

Venice however is something spectacular so that is a good one too,

Rome is way too touristie for me. One day in Rome is enough. Florence is fast paced and nuts. Sienna and Viterbo were real nice, but that's just my opinion.
