Everyone seems to love the big cities of the north. Of those big tourist cities, I have only been to Rome, but it is NOTHING compared to the beauty, lifestyle, and tourism of Belle Sicilia. I would fly into Catania or Palermo and take it from there. Sicily is generally undiscovered by Americans, but is definitely worth the trip. It is my favorite place in the world, and I've been many places. |

Wife just returned from an18 day Italian tour, yesterday. They flew into and out of Rome, being most centrally located and more days there than anywhere else. |

Rome would be a well served airport and city. I love Venice and it also has a well served airport as well, of course you cannot miss to visit Venice during your trip! |

There is no single "best" place to arrive in Italy. It depends on where you intend to visit and where you're coming from (what flights are available).
I've been in Italy for about 9 years and don't have a favorite city or area - they're all different and have interesting things to see and do. Personally, I like the local festivals and some of the best are in smaller towns like the Marostica Chess spectacle coming up in September, Carnevale in Cento or Ivrea, the truffle festivals in Alba and San Miniato, the Christmas markets in Bolzano and Trento, the Eurochoclate and Jazz Festivals in Perugia ... There are thousands of events to choose from depending on when you're here.
For sightseeing, it depends on your interests - certainly Rome, Venice and Florence are great options. I spend a lot of time in Venice, Florence, Verona, and Bologna because they're close to where I live. If you're interested in scenery, Cinque Terre, the Amalfi Coast & Capri, the lakes region, the Alps, and other places all have a lot to offer. |

The best city to arrive in is Rome. It's the central hub for tourists.
My favorite city is a tie between Siena and Venice. Siena being the most charming; Venice the most romantic.
I've seen most of the sights in Italy a couple times and I would never get tired of Siena and Venice. |
