Best hostels in Rome, Italy?

Based on location to sites like the Trevi fountain and museums.
Any suggestions are very welcome! I am going to Rome in Jan. 2010.Need some tips on cheaper places to stay and where to buy food, like markets and also transportation. I need a hostel that is safe and clean. If you know of a great Gilato place, I will check it out too! Anyone know if Jan. is a decent time of year to be in Rome? Thanks!

The Central Rome areas are actually very safe for a big European city, my wife and I have only ever felt safe walking through Rome at night - perhaps with the exception of Termini.

For some help and info about the Rome public transport system http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/public-transportation-in-rome-italy.html should be an valuable source.

For searching hostels, hotels, B&B's I use http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/hotels-in-central-rome.html
to compare prices from several online hotel booking companies - this greatly increases your chance of getting the best rates for accommodation in Rome Italy.

This top 10 free Rome tourist attractions will give you a good starting point http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/rome-tourist-attractions.html
You will also find info about the Pantheon and Roman Colosseum just below.

If you are unsure about which area of Central Rome you would like to book your accommodation you can see http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com./rome-italy-map.html for some advice and maps of the central Rome areas.

Remember for Rome you need: 1) Most importantly a comfortable pair of walking shoes! Rome is a city you will want to walk a lot in.
2) If you're going in Winter - a raincoat.
3) A little backpack for your maps, snacks, guide book
4) A little water bottle. Rome has thousands of free drinking fountains - and yes the water in Rome is potable - and in fact due to its mineral content it's probably better than most bottled mineral waters.

Restaurants are abundant so an intro into the types of restaurants, etiquette and food culture http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/rome-restaurants.html is a good start.

Enjoy, you're going to love it, you're off to a good start by preparing like you're already doing!

Oh yes, Jan can get quite chilly but Rome is fortunate to have plenty of sunny respites throughout winter - bring a nice thick warm coat.

Rome is fantastic in each peiod of the year.
For the accommodation I suggest you Relais Rome.

They're holiday apartments with all services and amenities of a hotel, at few steps from the Spanish Steps.

Look at the site

Yes, January is not bad time to Rome, coz with mild weather you can enjoy your trip, sometimes raining there, so better to ready with it as well, but most of attractions are open and with less crowd , you can enjoy your trip. March is best with weather
here several articles will help you
