I would probably pick Venice, because it's the most romantic city around. But you should read up a little on it first, though.

Milan? Why would you go there? It`s such a sad city, plus there`s nothing to see there! I suggest you to go to Rome, from there you can visit Florence, it`s not too far, it`s just a 4 hours driving. Then from Rome you can go visit the South of Italy, go see Pompei (i`m sure you heard about it), don`t miss Sorrento, The Amalfi coast, Amalfi Positano, Capri these places are wondeful (yes, i`m from Naples!). Visit the island of Sicily,Taormina is very nice. Also from a city near Rome you can catch the boat to go to Sardinia. Make sure you go visit these places in the summer time, while Rome and Venice are beautiful even in the wintertime. Have a great time in Italy!

I would live in Rome and visit other places from there... it is the most centrally located of the three places.

Firstly, do you have a EU passport? Without this you can only stay for 90 days out of every 180 days in Italy, unless you've made prior visa arrangements with the Italian Embassy in your country. If you've got the passport, just ignore this advice.

The three cities you've mentioned are all totally different, so which you choose depends very much on what you intend to do and what your interests are. Personally, if I was able to live in Italy for a lengthy period, I'd choose Venice. It's my favourite European city, and I just love being surrounded by the history and character of the place. Given half a chance I'd live there, but unfortunately that's unlikely to happen.

Wow...that is awesome. I would rule out Milan. It is a nice & gorgeous city, but doesn't compare with Rome or Venice. Rome is an awesome city and there is so much to see. Not to mention that it is nearby to Florence and Pisa, which are also nice cities to visit...only about 2 hours away by train. Venice is gorgeous though. It would be an awesome experience to live there and get around on mostly water. If staying there, I would look into the island of Lido. Cars are allowed there, but it is soooo less crowded with tourists and has a sand beach. Getting to San Marco from there is only a short water bus ride away! Also, getting down to Rome and Florence is only 5-7 hours by train and it is a gorgeous ride!

Rome is better as it's situated where you can travel from there to either farther up north or south. Milan, not so sure about, but Venice is amazing. I still would choose Rome though as it's central and short trips are easy to take from there.

credeghe ai ufo!
Venice: beautiful town, unique in the world but it's not easy to live there, you have to move to a place to the other only by foot or by ferry boat, there may be problems of "acqua alta" (small inundations) when it rains etc. The cost of life is high. It's better for a holiday week.

Rome: beautiful city, relaxing rythmes of life, high prices for flats and rooms but low for everything else.Good weather. Romans are friendly but services are better in northern italy.

Milan: grey cold city. Costs are high. People are always running everywhere and just don't care about you. Good for fashion.

You could take into consideration also Bologna and Florence.

Have a good time here in Italy! :))

milan sucks!honestly!
rome is very crowdy, but very animated.
venice is good but don't imagine you'll be living in the channels area and going to work with your boat.
if you go to venice land it's better you go anywere else.
look in italy it's cool living in a middle size city not huge city. and in the north! and remember nobody speaks english!

SirTommy
I'd suggest you to choose Rome or Venice, cause, according to my personal opinion, they're nicer places. Your decision among them should be based on your interests. Probably Rome has more to offer other than monuments, cause it's the biggest Italian city, while Venice is smaller, but probably more romantic.

Rome, I went there over the summer and it was amazing.

I am thinking of having a long visit to Italy in a few years and will probably go to Rome.
Why? Because you can get to anywhere else in Italy by train or plane from Rome - Venice and Milan are both in the north so it is a very long trek to get to the south from those places. If you are going to be there for a year you will want to get around a bit.
Also there is more variety in Rome. Venice is a lovely city but it is all of one style. Milan is very stylish but it does not have the wealth of history that Rome has. Rome has several periods of history. It also has fantastic art and lots of beautiful buildings.
Other things to think about. Milan is probably more expensive than Rome. If you're going over the summer Venice will be very crowded and 'rip-off touristy'. (The algae in the water can make it smelly too.) Rome can be crowded and hot in the summer too although you should be able to find somewhere to stay slightly out of the centre with access to a tube station.
