Here is the rundown about Italy's weather. I know it best because I live here and travel most of the country on a weekly basis (work)
Lets break the country in half first, since the north is a lot different from the south.
North is anything from Rome and up.
South is anything from Naples down.
October-april it is usually colder in the north, but less tourists, however the sometimes close a lot of tourist attractions. If you want skiing, then Dec-Feb is ideal. May - September is a very nice time of the year for the north, however there are a lot of tourists and everything costs more.
For the south, Dec-march is the rainy season, also many beach areas are closed and it even gets down to freezing temperatures when its not raining. April- june and september-november is ideal for anywhere in the south. However keep in mind that August is the travel month for Italy, Many of the nice things in the south will be closed for vacation time. if you are a tourist you probably will not notice. July-Aug. are the hottest months in the south, temperatures above 100 F are not uncommon. 3 years ago it was over 100 F for 20 days straight in sicily!
If you want skiing I suggest you head to the north, Mt Etna on the island of sicily is terrible for skiing. |

I think the best time is mid-September to end of October. You get plenty of warm (but not hot) weather, very little rain, and great prices because the main tourist season is over.
I spent these 7 weeks in Italy about 2 years ago... it was fantastic/ |

That depends on what it is you are looking for. The worst is August. The entire country is on holiday. I like late spring or Autumn. Not too many tourists and the weather is good. |

I agree with aeibrean23, but be sure NOT to go during Easter Holiday (it gets extremely crowded everywhere because the whole continent goes on holiday that week).
September can be a real nice travel month in southern Europe, too.
Have fun!! |
