Best way to travel in Rome?

My family of four - one being a baby - will be getting to Rome on a Monday and staying until Wednesday. We are staying near the Vatican Wall, but of course we want to see everything. Whats the best way to travel for those few days?

Also, we are taking the train to Pisa on Wednesday, is the train pretty easy to figure out?

Then in Pisa, whats the best way to get around. We are staying in between Pisa and the airport.

You cant' see everything of Rome in two days. The first day you could visit Vatican (early in the morning the Vatican Museum, because the queues are frightful) and then St Peter Church and Castel S. Angelo. This day you can walk.
The second day you could take the subway (line A to Termini, then line B) and visit Coliseum and the archelogical zone of Roman Forum. From Coliseum you can easy reach the central zone of Piazza Venezia and Via del Corso which is also famous for shopping. At the end you reach Piazza di Spagna and you take again subway line A to Vatican.
To go to Pisa the simplest and cheapest way is the regional train. You don't need to go to the central station (Termini), you can also take it in a little station (Roma S. Pietro) which is near the Vatican. One starts at 10.29 am and arrives in Pisa Centrale at 2.15 pm, another starts at 12.29 am and arrives in PisaCentrale at 4.15 pm. The price is 17,65 euros.

Pisa is small and you can visit it walking. The best to see is all in the Piazza dei Miracoli. Then you take a train from Pisa Centrale to Pisa Aeroporto, and you are in the airport.

subway is easy/cheap and you won't have to worry about getting ripped off by taxi drivers

by bus. You must (can) take a ticket 4 all day

Walking or taking the metro. It's easy to get around using the metro (A or B Line)...If you have a stroller, you might have to haul it up/down stairs...but once you get to the centro, it's very easy to walk around places.

*be wary of pickpocketers. I've been to Roma a few times with children and it wasn't a problem.

Rome city centre is not that big and is best seen by foot.
traffic is quite bad, so avoid car rent and, if possible, use taxis just to and from the airport.
Buses can get stuck in traffic for ages during day time, quite fast and reliable at night.
Subway, although dirty and crowded, is cheap and reliable, however there are just 2 lines, I advise to take it just for the trips to and from your hotel.

Italian rail network is cheap and pretty fast.

Enjoy.

Good luck trying to see everything in the Eternal City! Allow plenty of time for (1) getting to the sights, which are sometimes tricky to find, and (2) waiting in line to get inside. Pick up a Roma Pass to skip the ticket lines and walk straight in, PLEASE read Rick Steves' Rome guide book www.ricksteves.com for in-depth info. I'd allow 2-3 sights per day.

I usually walk a lot in Rome, and ride the bus. DON'T try to drive there if you're not a Roman or a Demolition Derby veteran. Taxis are good; catch them at taxi ranks around the city. Pick up a good city map showing the taxi ranks. The subway trains are good but have pickpockets, and might not go where you need to go.

The train to Pisa should be fairly easy to figure out. www.raileurope.com has the schedules and you can get tickets and reservations there too. It's often cheaper to buy tickets at the station, but allow plenty of time for standing in line. There are several types of trains to choose from; the faster and roomier they are, the more expensive. First class is worth the cost; 2nd class can be crowded.

Beware the traffic outside Roma Termini station, and the pickpockets in the stations and on the trains.

I've never been to Pisa.

Have a wonderful trip!

I was wondered by the efficiency ot the roman public transport when we went there in January so I would advise the bus.
Going to Pisa is possible with a direct train (see the link) would require travelling to Firenze (using the HST) an then a local train to Pisa.
Pisa (meaning the historical district is very little and everything is in walking distance from everything other) but if you have time get a car and drive on the old SS12 (not the new!) as soon as you will be 500-1000 feet over the town you will see a wonderul scenery. The road is quaite winding: stop an enjoy the wiew.

I went to rome. Easiest way to travel around is by the train. They got a train network like London but with fewer lines. Went to pompei by train

Definitely by foot...its actually not that far to walk and much easier than trying to find buses, trains etc.. When I was there we walked from the Vatican City to the Coleisum which is the main area of Rome. The train to Pisa is very easy to figure out. Again it is best to walk because everything you will want to see is pretty close together and quite near the train station. I would definitely recommend climbing the leaning tower of Pisa and going to see the Trevi Fountain in Rome. Enjoy yourself =]

jkb :) :( :@
use tour busses, or ur feet..but with a baby probably tour busses...cabs are very expensive...there are many diffferent tour busses, and you can buy tickets for one at ur hotel and get on and off at stops depending on what you want to see...i suggest the forum and colleseum...go inside....and also you should get a tourguide for there are no signs in the colleseum.....
the train is easy to figure out...don't leave ur seats open, buy first class becuase italian buisness men will steal first class seats if u leave them open...and idk about pisa
