G's Random Thoughts

Beyond the obvious sites, what are your best memories of Rome?

Obviously we'll go to the Vatican City, and the Forum, and the Coliseum and such. But what other sites or what little places within the big sites captured you?

I’ve been to rome once on a whirlwind weekend. One of my favorite memories was eating in an underground restaurant hewn in stone. Great food, great atmosphere, unfortunately I’ve long since lost the little matchbook I picked up there and have no idea where it was or what the name was.

One thing that a lot of people miss in Rome is the view through the keyhole at the Consiglio di Malta on Aventine Hill. There's a picture here: http://www.theculturedtraveler.com/Archi... and others:

This is worth the effort to find (close to Circus Maximus) - relatively few do. This site give directions on how to find it: http://wikitravel.org/en/Rome/Aventino

The Crypt at Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini is also worth a visit if you're interested in seeing works of art made from the bones of .more than 4000 monks. http://www.cappucciniviaveneto.it/cappuc...

The Museum of the Souls of Purgatory is essentially a ghost museum.

There was a restaurant in the piazza in front of the Pantheon that had really good pear gelato. My daughter ordered a macedonia (mixed fruit) gelato that was really good and unusual. They apparently took little balls of different flavored frozen fruit gelato and mixed them into an lemon gelato mix and then froze the whole thing. Each bite had distinct fruit flavors instead of being mixed into one blend. If you stand on the steps of the Pantheon the restaurant was on the left just past the fountain.

I really loved having lunch in the Jewish quarter. the name of the restaurant was "IL Portico" Fried artichokes. Yummy.

Piazza Navona was wonderful. Great place to people watch and buy some art, have a some dinner. Wonderful atmosphere to have dinner at "Tre Scalini".

Enjoy Rome again and don't forget to toss your coin in the Trevi Fountain.)
Ciao

Santa Maria sopra Minerva behind the Pantheon was one of my big surprises, so unassuming from the outside. The ceiling is superb. The choir/orchestra rehearsal one evening was breath-taking. Go there at night.

I was in Rome for about 4 nights, I ended up going to a disco with some random Italians that I met on the street, it was the best time of my life, stayed up all night, learned a little Italian, and partied with some locals who catually knew where to go and what to do. It is always best to ask the opinion of the people who live there what is the best and worst thing to see, go see the city at night if you can, busses are easy to catch everywhere in the city, the Vatican is excellent at night, just a little diffrent feel to it. If you want to go into the Sistine Chapel, go early in the morning and be the first one there, or else you wait in the hot sun and waste your day, it is probally the most crawded attraction in Rome. I think they open at like 8 so be there at 7, but check on that one. If you go to the Coliseum and Forum, either get a guide or just follow a group around that has a guide, you will be able to hear the guide that speaks english, then just kinda follow them through, no one will really know, or care. You can also just wander around the city, there is a court downtown which you can take the subway to, where there are all sorts of cool bars and cafes to eat at at night, many cool fountains, and small shops selling all sorts of cool things, so go and explore if you have time.

Hope this helped you out.
