Believe it or not, the cheapest way is to fly. RyanAir ( http://www.ryanair.com ) has flights from Milan (Orio al Serio) to Rome Ciampino Airport for around $50 round trip. That is cheaper than driving.

Trains would cost you about $70 each way (For an Intercity train - more for other trains). The benefit to taking the train is, however, that the train will leave/arrive art the train stations which are downtown, while the airports will require you to get in and out of the city. So if you have someone taking you and picking you up, that is fine. But if you have to rely on public transportation, that can add another $20 to each leg of your trip if you fly. You can get train details here: http://www.trenitalia.com

You can also take the bus, but it is still more expensive than air, and will take forever. Here is bus info for you: http://www.sena.it/index_e.htm

cheapest and easier is the train that drops you in the center of the city (with flying you have to spend hours and money getting to and out of the airport)

Walk....lol..........sorry i had to say it

ryan air uses airports out of the city..Milan Orzio etc is in bergamo about 2 hours from Milan.....take the train. They go center of the city to the center of the other, its easier

i'm italian. cheapest way is by train, but you have to know that trains in italy aren't ever punctual. or by plane but from LINATE airport, not MALPENSA or ORIO AL SERIO, because they are 2hours far form milan. From the airport fiumicino (maybe from ciampino too) there are a little train for 11€ that takes you in the central station.
