itYou cannot use an every day American cellphone in Italy Ask your service provider, but 9 out of 10 you will find that it would not work. My Verizon telephone did not, s o I purchased the most inexpensive cellphone I could find and I have been using it every time I go to Italy. I caution you, every time that you want to add minutes to your cellphone they charge you 5 extra Euro so it is much cheaper to buy 40 Euros of calls once (which will cost you 45 Euros, rather than 20 Euros twice (which will cost you 50 Euros). The tariffs are high for calls to the USA so I advise you to also purchase an international phone card. I have one called EUROPE . I only bought 5 Euros and I still have some money left in it. I found that calling with this card is little cumbersome but it is much cheaper than calling directly, both by cellphone and land line. |

don't buy an actual card, use this service, u pay with credit card, get the pin number by e-mail, I use it and it's cheaper than anything I've tried before:

here is my recommendation.. buy a cheapo nokia UNLOCKED phone on ebay(with out any tmobile, cingular att name on it) U can get one for 30 bucks if u really look. then go to italy go into a cell phone store get yourself a sim card that cost 5 euros vodaphone charge it up 10 euros and you are good to go! all incoming calls are free and you have euro phone number if someone wants to call u! I do this all the time and i have no problem.. If you have tmobile as your provider and i believe cingular has the sim cards in there phones u can call them and ask them to give u the unlock code it takes like 3 weeks to get it. |

If you have a tri-band cell phone, have your carrier give you a code to unlock it so you can use it in Europe. Then, when you get to Europe buy a chip from a local carrier (in Italy, I recommend Vodafone). This is what we did on our most recent vacation. We were able to call family at home, and call friends/hotels in Italy, plus family from home was able to call us. It was really convenient.
buon viaggio! |

I have T-Mobile as a carrier the service was .99 a minute. I would call your provider and see if they have international calling, most do and ask for the rate per min. I think the cell is cheaper than a calling card and a lot easier too ( not so many numbers to dial). |

It's better not to use your cell.It will cost you a fortune. You can find calling cards especially for US calls everywhere in Europe. |
