I'm having a report about the top tourist spots of Italy, so I did a research and I found out that St. Peter's Basilica, St. Peter's Square, etc. are landmarks of Vatican City. Knowing that Vatican is a sovereign state, can I include those spots when all I'm just bound to report is Italy's?
Many people consider a visit to the Vatican a highlight of a tour of Rome/Italy. It certainly is listed as one of the tourist attractions in the guidebooks, etc. I think you could include it and at the same time demonstrate that you are aware that the Vatican is actually a separate state in your report by saying something like: "Although in reality the Vatican is a sovereign state in it's own right, ..." and continue from there. San Marino is another popular destination here that is a separate state.

Not really.
Vatican City is an independent country with membership in the United Nations and ambassadors to most other countries.
Vatican City is completely surrounded by the city of Rome, Italy.
Here is the official website of the Vatican City State: http://www.vaticanstate.va/EN/homepage.htm
And the U.S. Department of State's web page for the Vatican City State: http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/3819.htm

The Vatican is separate from Italy, but it is as much a part of Rome or Italy it's self that you would be foolish not to. To make sure you don't get counted off, just make sure that you point out that you know that the Vatican City is separate from Italy, but why you put it in there.

It is separate. Must see! Best place to mail letters or postcards home in Italy. Pope's mail is treated better and actually makes it home and fast!!!
