I would think anyone traveling abroad needs to have a visa to distinquish who they are for the foreign authories. With that said, if you didn't get one, your could become a victim of circumstance to that county like that of Natalie Hallowell and many others.

Ummm...I'm going to Italy for ten days this summer, and I don't need one, but then again I'm an American citizen... I think my teacher told us that if we were citizens (of the US) we don't need them... Personally for you, I'd get one just in case.

Double check with an Italian Consulate, or a book like Let's GO .
However, An individual with a U.S. Passport has up to three months of legal visitation in most European Countries, including Italy, to visit without requiring a visa.

you do not need a visa But you do need a valid passport.
also i always carry at least one other photo identification. you can check this out in most popular guide books.
