You better buy in advance, also depending in which day and at what time you want travel. This is also depending on which kind of train you want take since on mostly of the trains from Rome to Florence the seat reservation is mandatory and by buying the ticket to the station you risk to miss yr trip if the train you chosed is sold out. It's not allowed to hop on it if you've not yr seat booked.
Check on the Trenitalia's website http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

I disagree with martox45. The on station machines can give good deals. I found on one trip if I had bought a ticket from Bologna to Verona in advance would have cost an extra €22

I've done this trip 3 times already and always bought it at the train station. The only time I would suggest to buy in advance if its on Sunday or Friday night. Alot of people go home for the weekend and you wont always get the train that you want or the time that you want to go. When i say in advance I mean.. maybe the day before you can go to the train station and buy it off the machines(it works in various languages).. Its not worth doing those long lines.

I agree with both of your previous answers. It depends on your flexibility and how many are travelling. I purchased tickets from Florence to Rome at the ticket machine in the Termini via Eurostar (it's like an express train) two days before we were supposed to depart because it was recommended. My fiancee and I had two seats adjacent on that train. The day we were supposed to depart we actaully ended up being early and were able to reschedule our tickets at the machine. But, we were not seated together. It was just about an hour so it was no big deal, but if you are with a group and want to sit together you should go in advance. Don't book it online. It was significantly more expensive for me to order the tickets in the US than to buy them at the Termini in Florence. I would also like to mention that I was going to Rome on a Friday. The myth is that people leave the city on the weekend. But that is the same myth in NYC. That is not true. I, like many other NY'ers would love to vacation every weekend, but that is not reality! So honestly, I don't know if this made a difference or not.
