Can you apply for a passport even though you haven't any travel plans yet?

I am considering travelling to Italy maybe next year and thought I could get a passport now. When I check different websites it seems that in the application they ask for travel dates/itinerary. If I don't have them should I even bother to appy for the passport? If anyone can shed some light on this I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

of course! dont go to websites.. Im just assuming your an american citizen. If you are go to your local post office with 2 passport size birth certificate and some other id. It will cost a little under 100 dollars and if you are over 18 it will be good for 10 years. They will mail it to u with in 3 weeks and thats it. Next time u need a passport all u have to do is give them your old passport, application and what ever it cost to renew.

Yes,

A passport is an identity document.
It does not relate to travel plans.
If you need visas, then there validity needs to match you plans.
Most passports have a renewal period 1yr/3yr/5yr where you pay again for the benefit (!)
You can apply for your passport without any travel plans in mind.
I think they ask you just in case you are in a hurry and there may be a need to contact you.

Good Luck and I hope you enjoy Italy !

yes most likely the dates are optional just fill out the form and send it in

It is not necessary to have travel plans in order to get a US Passport.
Its actually better to apply ahead of your travel plans, since the actually processing time can take a couple of months
Besides, people who wait until the last minute must pay extra processing fees

Yes, You can. I'd deal directly with the US passport Department. While it is true these questions are asked, you may enter the roughest notion keeping it simple. They never bother anyone about it and it never appears on any documentation. I suspect they just ask for statistical purposes. I've never had an issue with it in 40 years of overseas travel.
I do believe that you may apply for a passport at your local post office. Worth asking. Good luck.

Yes....you can get a passport anytime. It is a very good idea to have one these days even for traveling within your own country.

Linda B
Yes, and you should. It takes a couple of weeks to get it. It's also a great form of identification.

Yes! I don't know what took me so long, It is the best thing I have ever done. Now I am always ready to travel anywhere.

Yes! Anyone can apply for and receive a passport from their own country without ever using it.
In fact, many countries require you to have your passport BEFORE you make arrangements as your passport number will be requested for things like entry visas.

you can apply for a passport at any time. as far as the dates you are going to travel thats just a standard question. You can enter any dates you choose (always allowing for the time to process your passport). Keep in mind that passports expire so if you arent going to be travelling for a few years I suggest you hold off in applying for a passport till you are closer to your departure day. Not worth spending the money and not use it.
