You can get a very low priced Air trip either from Bergamo Orio Airport (one of the 3 Milan Airports - base of Ryanair) or fom Linate or Malpensa (the other 2 Airports - ALITALIA, AIR ONE and others - book early on a budget fare). First flight in the morning leaves before 7 am, gets you in Rome at 8 am and the last gets you back by around 11 pm. Just about enough for a "flying trip", but well worth it.
Forget the train, for a day it's ridiculous.

I used to fly the other round, every day, back and forth, when I had a company in Bergamo, then another in Milan, then another in Gallarate. No sweat.

On the other hand if you have an Air ticket into Milan, then have the final destination extended to Rome, hardly any price difference.

you can do but by train you need aroud 5 and half hour to go and the same to come back....in italy often train are delay..and so on ,but Rome is the eternal city and I suggest to plan at least 2 days to stay and it still not enough...is too beatiful!!!!!
buon viaggio
Viva l'Italia

hum... of course you can, but you should do it in a hurry... and it would not be that good...
the only way to do it it's to go by plane (about 40mins of flight)... but you know how irritating airports are...
by train it takes to long (at least 4 and a half hour)...
i suggest you should spend in rome 2 days at least, not to get stressed on the long trip...

hi! i'm italian!sorry but i speak english not so well! i live in como... do you know como?milan is very near to como!
however the time of the milan-rome is about five/six hours by car, about six hours by train and half past hour by ariplane.
i advice you the airplane!! don't use the trains, bacouse they are really slowly and dirty!!!
but i think that you can't visit rome in just one day!you need at least two or three days to visit well the italian cities!

What, do you think they only have horse and carriage there? Of course you can get there in a day, it would only take a few hours by train.

big city
Yes, it is easy to travel between those cities. The train in Italy is the best form of transportation.

If you are traveling from the US, you can pre-purchase train passes that will save you money. Any travel agent can help you- there are many passes to choose from. These are only available for purchase in US before you get to Italy.

Yes, it's a 4.5 to 6 hour train ride depending on which train you take. If you leave at 8:30 you can be in Milan by 1 o'clock in time for lunch.

Train. If you fly, try to avoid Alitalia, try to take AirOne
