Well, February is the time of the Carnival, so I don't think you'll get cheap accommodation easily. I'd opt for March.

Try www.hostelworld.com, we found inexpensive accommodation there via this website.

in February this year there is the carnival, full of turist.
I suggest you after the end of carnival (feb. 20) or in march the first 15 days.

Check out this site www.homeinvenice.com It's a flat right on one of the gondola canals and it's priced around 100-120 euro a night...

There are always lots of tourists in Venice.

Try www.venere.com for accomodation. I use them always. There's loads of accomodation of all prices and standards to choose from. You can search by area an there's customer feedback to rely on.

Buona fortuna

I can recommend this website www.laterooms.com,
I've used it when booking hotels on city breaks and I've never had any problems. You get to select your area(Venice is on there) and you can choose the star rating of the hotel that you would like to stay.It comes up with a list of hotels and a brief description of each hotel when you click on them. You can book up to 3 months in advance but sometimes you can get a pretty good bargain if you leave it until a few weeks before you go.Having said that the website normally gets you the hotels cheaper than normal so you should have a bit more to spend on your trip.

What's 'reasonable'? €200 a night B&B in the Dusoduro behind Academia - brilliant hotel, lovely people, probably cheaper than that in feb/march. Stayed there Sept. Easy to get to all the best places and near water buses and restaurants. Search on Venere.com they are a booking agency and get good prices. It will be cold though!

The best place to get started is by going to "Expedia.com" and do your research there. Also, check this place called: Alloggi Agli Artisti Hotel (1star) which is located exactly by the St. Lucia train station and close quartes of "Venice"
Mestre is much reasonable in price, but you will be paying less because there are "prostitutes" at night.
However, I do recomend that you stay in Venice not Mestre for the first 3 days until you find something better and suitable for your budget. Oh! becareful with the man (Italian AND non-Italian), they think american girls are loaded and will sweet talk to you in such a way that you will be forking for food, car rental, etc. They are VERY charming to your wallet and little to you
So, be careful...

Think again !!!
We went in April this year and it was stinking.
The "beautiful" waterways are full of sewerage and deisel and there are boards on the walls full of old used chewing gum. And it cost a small fortune in the cafes and bars ect.
Not exactly what you get in the brochures.
The most drity place on the planet.
Sorry if this bursts your bubble.
