Can you swim in the canals of Venice?

I am hoping to go on a self-tour of western Europe with my friend next summer, and Venice is one of the stops. We should be there 2-3 weeks... Any suggestions... Can I swim in the canals? I assume that I can't

Absolutely not, you cannot swim in the canals. I wouldn't even touch that water but when there is high water (don't worry, during Autumn only), I had to walk in it very often. I have seen many things swimming or surfacing from the water, things I won't tell here.

If you want to experience swimming in Venice go to Lido, it's a beach where all the Venetians go to swim...and you will be safe.

zafir
I wouldn't suggest it! But go to Lido and you'll find the beaches, although many are privately owned and it can be expensive getting a spot on the public beach.

Best place for beaches is Lido de Jesalo (not sure of spelling) on the mainland and towns around that area, where there are some beautiful places. It's only a 1/2 hour bus ride north of Venice.

No actually it is kind of illegal and if the police stop you, you will be in big trouble lol, it is alsoss dangerous because of all the boat going by and the water is very dirty and not safe.

Hope this helped you

Hi!
Unfortunately not ;o)))
The water is very dirty...even because in Venice...car cannot circulate because there are no streets and people moves with "gondole", typical boats ;o))

harajuku
I think u can..but you'll be prabably get ill or something..it's full of mouses there...and other animals..so listen to me. don't do that!! Near Venice Island there are many beaches like Jesolo and so on..the closest one is Lido of Venice Island..you can reach it by boat from San Marco square. Just reach the lagoon and ask 4 it! good luck.

Swimming in a sewerage works would be safer than swimming in the canals in Venice. Not only is there raw sewerage, but there is all sorts of dead things and diesel fuel floating in them. The canals would have to be the most putrid water on Earth - beautiful city though.

Yma
I'm pretty sure that you can't, I actually heard that the water's unsafe! That's not a fact though... Just a rumor I heard.

You can swim in there but i wouldn't recommend it because it is full of sewage and disease hope this helps

Hell no! Sewage empties into the canals.
